PRESS RELEASE
ALL MEDIA HOUSES,
NEW BURIAL AND FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR SOMЀ TRADITIONAL AREA
The Somè Traditional Council wishes to inform all the Somè citizens, both home and abroad that
we are about to introduce new funeral arrangements and organization to replace the current
ones.
This has become necessary to the Council due to the long period and the huge money, we as a
people spend and waste on our funeral celebrations. We have also observed that we attend
burials and funerals from Monday to Sunday which is not helping our society to grow the local
economy. This is affecting the youth especially in a negative way. It is also making our brothers
and sisters outside the jurisdiction not to participate in most of the funerals; they are punished
whenever they are bereaved, for not attending funerals.
The Council has started the process for this new change since last year. A committee was put
together of all identified groups to submit a report for consideration. After the submission of the
report, the Standing Committee of the Council had a discussion over it and had accepted the
report for implementation.
The Council met with all the chiefs and opinion leaders across the Somè Traditional Area and the
report was discussed and accepted.
Then a seven - member committee headed by Torgbi Atiane was tasked to go round all the
communities in the Somè Traditional Area to educate the opinion leaders and the citizens on the
new funeral plans.
The education of the public on the issue will take five months, from January to May, 2024 and
the new funeral plans will take effect from June, 2024. All Somè citizens and opinion leaders are
to take note that the Council will dissolved all dumegawo across Somè communities, in May,
2024. The dumegawo in office now will continue to work until the end of May 2024 when the
chiefs will nominate new dumegawo and the Traditional Council will approve and inaugurate
them into office.
We hope all the citizens of Somè will in line with their civil responsibility participate in this
ongoing community engagement on the new funeral arrangements to make the programme
inclusive and successful.
Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Torgbiga Adamah III
(President of Somè Traditional Council)
