Moo-Cyclers Reach Out to Potter School
New Bedford, Mass. – Students of Potter Elementary were educated
in recycling milk cartons by UMass Dartmouth students. The students
implemented a recycling program in the school to increase recycling
awareness. As part of a team project through the Charlton College of
Business, the team conducted two lunch assemblies where they
explained to the kids the milk carton recycling process. The 5th graders
were involved in a recycling poster contest. The winner was picked out by
Arnie, the corsair mascot. Janelle, the team leader, says, “Our team was very pleased with the results at
Potter Elementary School, we hope they will continue recycling milk cartons with the program we
implemented. Our goal is for the program to continue long after we are gone.”
The project is part of a course called “Developing and Managing Work Teams.” Eight teams of four or five
students from the management course are working on various projects to increase awareness of recycling
in New Bedford and Dartmouth.
"The goal is to learn about working in a team environment," said the course Professor Kellyann Berube
Kowalski, adding that the theme of the project is to use a service learning project that enables the students
to give to the community.”
