Elementary students at William Taylor Elementary School in New Bedford participated in a recycling competition to learn about single-stream recycling. The students were divided into classes and tasked with collecting as many recyclable materials as possible within a set time period. The class that collected the most recyclables would have their photo taken holding letters to spell out "SINGLE STREAM" and be featured in local newspapers. The project was led by UMass Dartmouth students as part of a senior-level management course aimed at promoting recycling in various communities.

NEW BEDFORD – Elementary students at William Taylor Elementary School in New
Bedford will race to collect as many recycled materials as possible to learn about and
practice single stream recycling.
The group, led by several UMass Dartmouth students, traveled to the Elementary school
both October 31st and November 13th. There, they assigned the students a project to
promote single stream recycling. The project was to see which class was able to collect
the most single stream recyclable materials; empty bottles, cans, paper and cardboard,
within the specific time frame. The class would then use their collected material to
create posters each with letters forming the phrase “SINGLE STREAM”.
“As a team we plan to educate not only the kids of William Taylor Elementary, but the staff
as well as to what Single Stream Recycling is. We plan to do so in a fun, interactive
manner to get the students involved and have fun while they recycle” said team
member Devyn M. Blume.
The class that was able to recycle the most material after two weeks was then selected to
have a photographer take a picture of them holding up their letters, which would then
be posted in the New Bedford Guide as well as The Standard Times.
This project, along with several others are part of a course called through the Charlton
College of Business to promote recycling within several communities. In total there
were roughly seven teams comprised of about five students from the senior-level
management course. The job is to increase as well as promote recycling through these
projects which included activities such as traveling to schools, hosting events and even
completing radio show in effort to educate the several communities that were reached.
