PERCHE’ l’eLEARNING NEL PROGETTO EDUTALENTI?
Supporting Learners in Adaptive Learning Environments through the enhancement...Luca Mazzola
This document summarizes a presentation on supporting learners in adaptive learning environments through enhancements to the student model. It discusses open learner models and 6 proposed research directions to make the learning curve more progressive and the interpretation of models more comprehensible. These include positioning learners, innovative interfaces, temporal evolution, adaptive representations, integrating models across courses, and defining metrics. 11 dimensions for analyzing the research directions are identified relating to effectiveness, complexity, data needs, and user experience. Star plots will be used to relatively rank the directions. Current work involves adapted interfaces and social positioning metrics, with future steps validating interfaces and introducing proximity metrics and visualization.
The document discusses using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to model the e-prescribing process in Italy. UML can help manage the complexity of modeling a prescribing process, which involves the transition from diagnosis to treatment and needs continuous monitoring. It allows formal specification of actors, interactions, and object properties. This can help control the full process, validate actions, and prevent errors and omissions, thereby improving safety. The presentation provides examples of how UML can be used to model different aspects of e-prescribing.
GVIS: a framework for graphical mashups of heterogeneous sources to support d...Luca Mazzola
This paper introduces the GVIS framework and describes one of its applications built in support of user profile awareness. This application is aimed at opening part of users' profiles to their inspection by exploiting a graphical representation of their personal data. We developed an infrastructure for presenting these high level information in a configurable and adaptable way. The framework we developed is able to retrieve data from heterogeneous sources just by writing a small adapter and allows us to mix together different streams through an XML configuration that relies on a set of operations for elicitation of the most interesting fragments. The final goal is to provide an easily readable graphical representation of the most relevant information, in order to support the human visual system, more capable to have an overview with this kind of solution than with text. As an example application we have mashed up URLs from user browsing history with tags coming from del.icio.us: the resulting output, represented as a pie chart, shows the most relevant subjects followed by a user. Some open issues and problems, we hope to research next, are presented in the conclusion part.

Concept extraction with convolutional neural networksLuca Mazzola
This document summarizes a presentation on using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for concept extraction. It discusses using CNNs to automatically extract keywords or concepts from documents, representing words as word embeddings and analyzing sequences of words as n-grams. The presentation evaluates CNN performance on concept extraction compared to part-of-speech tagging approaches, finding CNNs achieve a slightly better F1 score while increasing recall at the cost of precision for longer n-grams. It concludes by discussing possible improvements like using different word embeddings, n-gram sources, or neural architectures like RNNs.

This document summarizes a presentation on learner models in online personalized educational experiences. It discusses the context of technology enhanced learning and the problem of disengagement in online learning. A proposed solution called GVIS creates user profiles by aggregating data from multiple sources and presenting it visually to support self-reflection and tutoring. Initial analysis found that simpler, more aggregated visualizations were preferred. GVIS was integrated with Moodle and Adapt2 to test social visualization. Results found an impact on user behavior enhanced by social aspects, and that tutors preferred compact, intuitive information. Further development of GVIS was suggested to better support instructional design.

Toward adaptive presentations
of student models
in eLearning environmentsLuca Mazzola
This document proposes an architecture for adaptively presenting student models in eLearning environments. The architecture is template-based and allows instructional designers to specify different indicators, adaptation policies, and encoding rules to customize the presentation of open learner models based on a learner's preknowledge, preferences, learning goals, or experience level. The expected output is an adapted presentation of the learner model supported by customized indicators produced through templates defined by the instructional designer and guided by learner characteristics at runtime. The architecture will be validated by evaluating its usability, the impact of adaptive features, and learner perceptions of usefulness through empirical studies and focus groups.
The document discusses research towards home healthcare informatics. It presents three tools: the Family Medical Lexicon to establish a common health vocabulary; HMFD to digitally manage a multi-generational family's medical history; and a drug monitoring system to help patients properly manage medication schedules and administration. The tools aim to provide accessible, secure, and integrated informatics support to empower patients and improve healthcare outcomes, especially in the home environment.
