Considering the amount of air treated any temperature increase add costs :
 PVA and HPMC based coating systems requires high tablet bed temperature

QUICK CLEANING
 HPMC
Almost insoluble in hot water (gelation phenomenon)
Consequence : temperature of cleaning water (limited to 40°C)
Result : longer cleaning time and use of more detergents
 Lycoat®
Soluble in cold and hot water. Its viscosity decrease with temperature
allowing a quick cleaning limiting the use of detergents.

LYCOAT HPMC MOISTURE SORPTION
 The study shows
- HPMC- or Lycoat-based coatings
have the same permeability to
water.
- permeability is more plasticizer-
than polymer-dependent.
 Conclusion:
Lycoat® based (just like HPMC-and
PVA PEG based) formulations
require hydrophobic additives
(e.g. stearic acid…) to gain water
barrier properties.

INERTNESS
- Polyphenol dissolution is delayed and incomplete for HPMC-coated
tablets.
- Similar issues does occur with PVA based coating systems and acidic
substances.
- For Lycoat®-coated tablets, dissolution is identical to that of tablet
cores both qualitatively (kinetics) and quantitatively.
