2. Introduction
The electric iron is an
appliance used for pressing
clothes.
Consists of a hot plate which is
heated using electrical energy.
Works on the principle of
Joule’s Law of Heating.
The electric iron is an
important device in almost
every household.

4. History of Electric Iron
The invention of the electric iron
coincided with the widespread
electrification of American homes
in the 1880s.
In 1882, Henry W. Seeley of New
York City received a patent for the
electric flatiron.
His model had built-in coils and
was heated on a rack.
It weighed almost 15 pounds
(6.8 kg) and took a long time to
heat.
5. Components and working of Electric Iron
Components of the electric iron are:
Live, neutral and earth wires.
Soleplate
Heating element
Thermostat
Bi-metallic strip
It works on the principle of Joule’s Law of Heating
6. Advantages of Electric Iron
Disadvantages of Electric Iron
Can cause electric fire
Can’t run during power-cut or low voltage supply
Not as efficient as steam iron
Light Weight
Energy Efficient
Low Maintenance Cost
7. Enhancement
Steam Iron
• Heat converts water
to steam which
removes all dusts and
wrinkles.
Solar Panels
• Addition of solar panel
can make it
environment friendly.
Addition of battery
• Can use it during
power-cuts.
