Unique Images of Women
Ginevra de’ Benci Leonardo Da Vinci Three quarter pose is innovative. Her face is framed by Juniper and is a pun on her name. Juniper was the symbol for chastity, the greatest virtue a Renaissance woman could possess. Painted in 1474/78. She is shown outdoors and not in the confines of a home.
Venus of Urbino Titian Unapologetically erotic. However, since it is a Venus and not an actual woman- the sexuality is not as scandalous. Dog suggests fidelity. Was a wedding gift for the Duke of Urbino’s young bride. Painted in 1538.
La Liberté guidant le peuple Eug è ne Delacroix She is wearing a Phrygian cap-symbolic of the French Revolution. Was considered “ignoble” since she is barefoot and bare breasted. Mixture of classes portrayed in the painting. Allegorical goddess figure and a woman of the people
Symphony in White James McNiell Whistler This is of Whistler’s mistress, Joanna Heffernan. Was submitted to the Salon in Paris as the Girl in White, it was refused. Art for art sake purely appeals to the aesthetic. Reflection of Japanese Prints on the rug. Painted in 1862.
Monna Vanna Dante Gabriel Rossetti Reflects the artist’s relationship with women. Femme fatales. Recent death of his wife by suicide, one can detect the subtle note of melancholy beneath the striking beauty. Circular motion within the portrait. Painted in 1866.
Girl with a Watering Can Renoir The child does not have an identity. Became a staple for Renoir’s repertoire. Depicts innocence. Mature style of impressionism. Painted in 1876.
Madame X John Singer Sargent Portrait of Madam Gautreau. Salacious because of it’s obvious sensuality. Imposes on the viewer. Caused an uproar in the Paris Salon when it was exhibited. Painted in 1884.
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon Pablo Picasso Inspired by African Motifs, there are African tribal mask references on the faces. Some say the variety of styles that the women are painted in was deliberate. Seminal work, painted in 1907.
Adele Bloch-Bauer Gustav Klimt Sold in 2006 for a record $135 million, the most expensive painting sold (as of June 2006). Made of oil and gold on canvas. Decorative art style, or made in Jugenstil. Only model Klimt ever painted twice, this portrait was painted in 1907. Lauder, the buyer has been attempting to Recover Jewish owned art that was looted and taken by the Nazis.
