Gandhi was born in India in 1869. As a young boy, he stood up to his teacher by refusing to cheat on a spelling test, showing courage. He also took the blame for a crime committed by a friend. Gandhi continued to show courage throughout his life by making new friends in a new school, caring for his wife while studying, and continuing his work advocating for Indians in South Africa despite attacks and difficulties. He led numerous non-violent protests and campaigns that helped reduce taxes for Indians and gain recognition of Hindu marriages, establishing himself as a leader for the Indian independence movement.
