A handy short guide for what makes great formative assessment (focussed on Primary / K-12), bringing together insights from the Commission for Assessment without Levels, serving Headteachers, Ofsted, Parents and Pupils.
“It is during the middle grades that students either launch toward achievement and attainment, or slide off track toward a direction of frustration, failure, and ultimately early exit from the only secure path to adult success.” (Balfanz, R. 2007)
Schools that pay attention to transition and have an intentional transition plan see more success in increasing achievement and reducing retentions. Having an effective transition program contributes to developing a positive learning environment. Both sending and receiving schools need to work collaboratively with each other, and with families to provide ongoing support for students as they experience the transition to the middle grades.

Effective learning especially for early childhood is one of the most vital component when comes to children development. From the assessment done, there are fundamental component which comes to be of much concern when comes to teaching young children. I understand that it is hard for managing 3-4year-old kids. But I can say the experience was good starting from the interaction of the kids and also the mode of teaching. It is one of delicate stage of development and therefore more attention are required. I can also say it is one of the craziest stage and more active. Stage of ready to learn since they are more of emulating what is being done. According to the National Education Association (NEA) President Dennis Roekel, "research and field-work show that parent-school partnerships improve schools, strengthen families, build community support, and increase student achievement and success" (Roekel, 2008, para. 5). Schools cannot work alone in getting students to improve learning.
There has to be a structured, strategic plan that includes other stakeholders. A variety of potential community groups such as police officers, firefighters, civil rights, and youth services organizations are great examples of resources that can be involved in the teaching and learning process. Consider the benefits of seeking out this type of community support? What are some of the first steps in garnering the support of these leaders within the community? Additionally, when students get involved with this strategic planning in developing community relationships through service learning projects, the outcomes prove positive for social growth and academic development. The benefits of service learning project can be seen in the Service Learning: You Can Make a Difference (Links to an external site.) one and half minute video.
The first step in establishing a successful partnership between schools and community is the initial planning phase. This sets the foundation by assessing the school’s needs, establishing goals and objectives, and developing a vision for the future. One of the key factors is getting those individuals involved who have a genuine interest and care about what happens to the schools within the community. Price (2008) explains that through the “community mobilization” process, schools engage the community to create a list of community priorities, resources, needs, and solutions that promote stakeholder accountability and positive student support. He believes that by "mobilizing the village" and having community meetings related to education, support for education can be garnered (Price, 2008, p. 90). The concern, however, is recruiting school and community volunteers who will spearhead these partnerships. Educators may not feel qualified to assume this role, or may not have enough time to add another responsibility to their already-full plate. Price suggest that the key to getting teachers involved in creating partnerships is by tapping into their professional interest in community-based efforts in improving student success.

Case Study 1
The New Classroom Responds
There are many aspects of our culture that do not traditionally assume a democracy would work in a successful operation. An example of this is a grade school classroom. It is generally assumed that the students have no say in what they are taught, and the teachers are the ones who lay everything out and tell their students what to do and when to do it. The idea of strictly teaching academic skills in the classroom has been accepted in the past however recent studies show that implementing a democratic-style of learning can improve the students social outcomes in addition to academic knowledge. A particular case regarding this subject is the Social and Academic Learning Study to gain a better understanding of the Responsive Classroom approach. Based out of Stamford, CT, this case was investigated by Dr. Sara Rimm-Kaufman from the University of Virginia and it lasted three years.
The use of a democratic system in the classroom from grades K – 8 has traditionally never been thought of an ideal teaching and learning practice. It is not until recent that studies have proven these prior notions to be incorrect. With a Responsive Classroom implemented social skills are enforced just as much as academic skills. Additionally, another aspect of the Responsive Learning System is that the social relations aid the learning process.
According to the Responsive Classroom approach at rsponsiveclassroom.com there are six practices used in the system. Those six strategies are the following: “morning meeting, rules and logical consequences, guided activity, academic choice, classroom organization, and family communication strategies.”
The morning session involved in the Responsive Classroom is a great way to bring a democratic approach to teaching. During this session students interact with one another discuss what needs to be accomplished throughout the day how it is going to get done. Rather than just “jumping in” to the days lesson, the teacher can use this time to hear the opinions of the students. Not only does this make the process easier on the students, it lifts up team morale for student and teacher alike. The traditional train of thought that democracy in the classroom cannot work is proven wrong.
In addition, through the Responsive Classroom a clear guideline of rules and regulations are set forth for the students to understand. By knowing the rules and consequences students can teach themselves to obey the classroom guidelines. This gives the students a lot more responsibility and freedom to think for themselves.
Another key factor of the Responsive Classroom is the “guided discovery” style of teaching. Rather than presenting students with a textbook and having them read and answer questions on the text, this method goes a lot farther. Social skills are greatly built up with this method, because in addition to learning from the teacher, students learn from one another. They a ...

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Anger Management Courses
1.
2. Lets start with a question. Do you think anger management class should be
added to the public school curriculum? Over the last several years there
have been some extremely violent events that have happen at our public
schools. We teach math, English, history, geography, biology and other
general classes. Could we possibly add anger management to our school
system? What would be some of the abstract benefits? The cost to society
would be paid back many times over.
Firstly, the benefits of temper control have long been used successfully in
other parts of society. There is a long track record of people who have
benefited directly from anger training. We can use this track record as a
way promoting the adding of temper management class to our school
curriculum. The winning goals of this training speak for themselves.
3.
4. Secondly, the classroom training environment would be to have better behave
children, if they were require to take an anger class, at least once. The skills they
learn would greatly improve the class room atmosphere. The bottom line is that it
would be more relaxing and less tension for the student and the teacher, thereby
allowing more information to get out to inquiring minds.
Thirdly, lets look at the overall expense of unruly behavior and acts. The cost of
children fighting and acting out is tremendous to all parties involved. There are
injuries, severe sometimes, deaths occasionally, massive destruction of property
and other related by products of unchecked anger. All these items could be greatly
reduce if the school systems would add control management to list of school
requirements.
5.
6. Fourthly, the introduction of upset training will add to the growth of the
individual. Lets face it some children in our society are not getting good home
training. There a variety of reasons, some legitimate and some not. The main
point is that discipline management will begin to help the child begin to
mature and to realize that you don't always get your way and sometimes
people say things you don't like.
An additional by product of the instituting this training is an improved school
system. Like or not the overall reputation of a local school system determines a
lot of things. Some of things that are effected are the school systems
reputation, money, community support, attendances, the ability to get good
teacher for those schools. By ensuring that this principle is taught successfully
and early, the school system will survive on a higher plain.
