Warp Records was established in 1989
and has frequently been seen as a
pioneering independent record label.
Originally exclusively involved with
electronic music but more recently this
has expanded to include different types of
music

Warp Films was formed in 2000- their first
film was a Chris Morris short film and won
a BAFTA for best British short film. They
have subsequently made more short
films.
Company has grown with the success of
the feature films Dead Man’s Shoes and
This is England
4. Production Origins
Warp X was formed in response to the UK
Film Council and Film Four who came with a
commission of low-budget film-making in a
reaction to bigger budget films that were not
finding distribution.
They needed to come forward with a
distributor attached (Optimum Releasing) as
well as some external finance (Warp worked
with Screen Yorkshire and EM Media)
Little connection in terms of staff between
Warp Films and Warp X, but there is a
synergy between the two companies
5. Production Dilemmas
All films must be made for under £1.2
million
Company committed to making 6 films
over 3 years with funds divided between 3
films made for around £400,000 and 3
made for around £1 million.
An emphasis on films are made with
digital cameras (cheaper to use, arguably
provides more creative freedom but
possibly worse quality)
6. Production Dilemmas
In order to ensure that the production
company are able to make films so
cheaply, they made a conscious decision
to focus on Genre films rather than
Drama.
