What is AIDS?
 AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is
discovered for the first time in America in the year
1981. This disease is caused by the infection of a virus
known as HIV.
 HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
 HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus
that attacks the immune system. The immune
system fights infections and diseases in a person's
body.
 HIV is found in the body fluids of an infected person.
The virus is passed from one person to another through
blood to blood and sexual contact. Both the virus and
syndrome are often referred together as
 HIV/AIDS: People with HIV have what is called HIV
infection .
 HIV is the virus which attacks the T-cells in the
immune system
 AIDS is the syndrome which appears in advanced
stages of HIV infection
 HIV is a virus
 AIDS is a medical condition
Causes of HIV/AIDS
 HIV is caused by transmission of three types: Sexual,
exposure to infected blood and vertical transmission
from mother to child.
 HIV is transmitted via
Symptoms of HIV and AIDS
 Symptoms of early HIV infection
 Fever
 Night sweat
 Joint Pain
 Weight Loss
 Cough
 Sore throat
 Headache
 Upset stomach
Diagnosis of HIV/AIDS
 An antigen/antibody test performed by a lab on blood from
a vein can usually detect HIV 18 to 45 days after exposure.
There is also a rapid antigen/antibody test available that is
done with a finger stick. Antigen/antibody tests done with
blood from a finger stick can take 18 to 90 days after
exposure
Blood Test
Diagnosis is made through a blood test that screens
specifically for the virus .
If the HIV virus has been found , the test result is ‘positive’.
Then they will be asked to undergo some other test to see
how the infection has progressed.
ELISA
 ELISA stands for enzyme-linked immunoassay. It is a
commonly used laboratory test to detect antibodies in
the blood. An antibody is a protein produced by the
body's immune system when it detects harmful
substances, called antigens.
Treatment of HIV/AIDS
 HIV treatment (antiretroviral therapy or ART) involves taking medicine as
prescribed by a health care provider. HIV treatment reduces the amount of HIV
in your body and helps you stay healthy.
Side Effect
 HIV treatment can cause side effects in some people. However, not everyone
experiences side effects. The most common side effects are
 Nausea and vomiting
 Diarrhea
 Difficulty sleeping
 Dry mouth
 Headache
 Rash
 Dizziness
 Fatigue
 Temporary pain at the injection site (for shots)
CASES IN INDIA
 Meghalaya is witnessing an increasing trend of new
HIV infections. The adult HIV prevalence rate in the
state is 0.42 percent, which is higher than the national
average which stands at 0.21 percent.
 Uttar Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (UPSACS)
said the fact sheet estimates 1.78 lakh people living
with HIV in the state but only 1.22 lakh know that they
have this viral infection while others are unaware
