A smart city uses digital technology and communication to engage effectively with citizens. It includes smart infrastructure for government services, transport, energy, healthcare, and more. The basic infrastructure for a smart city includes adequate utilities like water and electricity, transportation, housing, IT connectivity, governance, security, and education. Challenges in developing smart cities include replacing old infrastructure, obtaining clearances, financing, dealing with multiple vendors, capacity building, and reliable utility services.

2. What is smart city…??
 A smart city is one that has digital
technology embedded across
all city functions.
 Smart City uses digital technology and
information and communication this engage
more effectively and actively with its citizen.
 The Smart City includes government
services, transport, traffic management,
energy, health care, water and waste.

3. Basic infrastructure for smart city
The core infrastructure elements in a Smart City
would include:
adequate water supply,
assured electricity supply,
sanitation, including solid waste management
efficient urban mobility and public transport,
affordable housing, especially for the poor,
robust IT connectivity and digitalization,
 good governance, especially e-Governance and
citizen participation,
sustainable environment,
safety and security of citizens, particularly women,
children and the elderly, and
health and education.

8. Different steps in the selection of smart cities are given below:
Letter to all state governments to shortlist potential smart cities based on stage-1
criteria according to number of smart cities distributed across states/UTs by the
MOUD-This is the first stage of Intra-State Competition
On the basis of response from states/UTs , the list of potential 100 smart cities are
announced. The second stage of All India competition begins

holding External Agency

 The smart organization of all that concerns citizens (knowledge,
talent, innovation, governance , etc…) taking advantage of the
existing resources

governance.

Citizenship to innovate in the management and participations
systems

The smart cities concept has gained a lot of attention lately and
it will most likely continue to do so in the future. Cities are
publishing smart plans, related conferences are trending and
more and more books are being written on the subject.
Smart technologies can provide solutions for cities by helping
them save money, reduce carbon emissions and manage traffic
flows.
