Karl Marx 1818-1883 The philosopher, social scientist, historian and revolutionary, Karl Marx, is without a doubt the most influential socialist thinker to emerge in the 19th century.
What Research did he conduct? He did most of his research on capitalism. His famous treatise “capital” is a detailed study of the rise of capitalism as a dominant system of production.
This diagram illustrates Marx’s materialist view that the system of economic production shapes the entire society. Economic production NEEDS both the industries, themselves, and the relationship between the capitalist ( who own the business and/or factory) and their workers. On these two foundations rest society’s superstructure, which includes its major social institutions as well as core cultural values and ideas. Marx mention that every part of a society supports the economic system.
According to Marx, the rise of capitalism was the cause of conflict in modern time. At the heart of capitalism, for Marx, is conflict among people in different economic classes. Especially between those who control wealth and power and those who do not. Marx argued that the division of people in a society into different classes define by how they make a living always produces conflict. He believed this would eventually destroy or modify capitalism.
He believed that social change is needed for a better society and to get social change there must be class conflict. He argued that the law in all other social institutions support the interest of the rich. “It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but their social being that determines their consciousness.”
