3. Purpose
Empower community health workforce in identifying,
screening and referring children, women, and
promoting healthy lifestyles to reduce related
diseases

4. Objectives
At the end of this module the CHV should be able
to:-
• Define gender and related terms.
• Describe the context of gender based violence
• Understand power relations and how they
contribute to GBV.

5. Forms and Types of GBV 1
• Sexual violence: Any sexual act, attempt to obtain a
sexual act, unwanted sexual comments or advances,
or acts to traffic women’s sexuality, using coercion,
threats of harm or physical force.
• Physical Violence: Any forceful or violent physical
behavior that causes actual harm.
• Psychological Violence/Emotional Violence: Any threat
to do mental harm to a partner, a child, a family
member, friends or oneself.

6. Forms and Types of GBV 1
• Intimate Partner Violence: This refers to behavior by an
intimate partner or ex-partner that causes physical, sexual or
psychological harm, including physical aggression, sexual
coercion, and psychological abuse and controlling behaviors.
• Child abuse: includes physical, sexual, psychological and
mental injury according to the children act 2001

7. Forms and Types of GBV
• Domestic violence: in relation to any person,
means violence against that person, or threat of
violence or of imminent danger to that person, by
any other person with whom that person is, or has
been, in a domestic relationship. This is according
to the protection against domestic violence act
2015
• Child marriage, or early marriage, is
any marriage where at least one of the parties is
under 18 years of age

8. Forms and Types of GBV
• Harmful cultural practices: are forms of violence which
are committed in certain communities and societies
for so long that they are considered, or presented by
perpetrators, as part of accepted practices.
• Female genital mutilation/cutting (fgm/c) refers to all
procedures that involve the partial or total removal of
the external female genitalia or other injury to the
female genital organs for non-medical reasons. (Who,
1995).

9. Causes of GBV
The core causes are:
• Gender inequity and gender inequality
• Abuse of power
• Lack of respect for human rights

10. Contributing Factors to GBV 1
• Culture: traditional gender norms that support male
superiority, entitlement, that tolerate and justify
violence against women
• Poverty: abuse occurs in all socio-economic groups.
Although poverty alone does not cause abuse,
poverty related factors such as stress, drug abuse
and inadequate resources increases the likelihood of
maltreatment

11. Contributing Factors to GBV 1

• Alcohol and drug abuse: higher use of alcohol and drug abuse
is associated with increased violence
• Illiteracy: the lower the education level, the higher the
likelihood of experiencing gender based violence

12. Contributing Factors to GBV 2
• Media: media (internet, TV, radio, magazines etc.)
perpetuate sexual and other forms of violence by
commodifying women’s bodies and women’s
sexuality. Exposure to this kind of media may lead to
the development of thought patterns, sexual arousal
patterns and other responses that support violence
against women. Such media may teach the youth
that sex is something that can be consumed and to
which men are entitled

13. Ways to help survivors of GBV
• Listening and being available; allow the
survivors to talk about what happened and to
express their feelings. Provide a safe
environment and set aside some time to talk
with the survivor
• Believing and not judging,some family and
friends may not believe the survivor and may
instead blame them for rape

• Offering a safe environment,some survivors are
forced by circumstances to leave their homes for
a safer environment.
• Emotional support by friends and family, friends
and family can assist by acknowledging the
feelings the survivors are experiencing.
• How families can cope with their own feelings,
as a family member or a friends, you may also
be affected when someone close to you has
been raped.
