community, regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation,
gender, race, religion, or nationality. It is often accompanied by
emotionally abusive and controlling behavior that is only a fraction of
a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence
can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and in severe
cases, even death
SIGNS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE
It is not always easy to determine in the early stages of a relationship if one
person will become abusive. Domestic violence intensifies over time. Abusers may
often seem wonderful and perfect initially, but gradually become more aggressive
and controlling as the relationship continues. Abuse may begin with behaviors that
may easily be dismissed or downplayed such as name-calling, threats,
possessiveness, or distrust. Abusers may apologize profusely for their actions or try
to convince the person they are abusing that they do these things out of love or
care.
 Humiliation and lots of critics from partner
 Feeling afraid of partner.
 Undermining your abilities.
 Exaggerated jealousy.
 Unpredictable temper of partner.
THE FACTS• 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during
their lifetime.
• Each year, more than 3 million children witness domestic
violence in their home.
• Domestic violence is the third leading cause of
homelessness among families.
• Domestic violence costs more than $37 billion a year in law
enforcement involvement, legal work, medical and mental
health treatment, and lost productivity at companies.
• Women are not the only victims of domestic violence –
men experience almost 3 million physical assaults each
year.
• 1 in 3 female homicide victims are murdered by their
partner of former partner.
Effects of domestic violence
• The effects of violence on a victim's health are far-reaching and devastating.
Women who are battered may suffer from a variety of medical problems, from
depression to chronic pain; they may also be at an increased risk of sexually
transmitted infections (STIs) or unplanned pregnancies. In advance, Research
conducted by The Advocates for Human Rights in Moldova and Ukraine revealed
that domestic violence may increase women's vulnerability to trafficking; women
who experienced violence at home were more willing to look for and accept an
uncertain and potentially risky job abroad. Domestic violence also has significant
consequences for children, family, friends, co-workers, and the community.
