Values are invisible… But they can become explicit and you can work with them Karin Ifanger October 7 2004
Agenda Background The Project CSC Values Team Approach and Scope Risks Organisation Time table Questionnaire Deliverables Paintings/Canvas Textiles Music Events Who receives a bag? Communication
Inspiration I am inspired by 2 works of Rolf Jensen: The Dream Society & Heartstorm The Dream Society gives an overview of the future describing how our society will transform from a ‘brain’ decision environment to a ‘heart’ decision environment. Heartstorm gives more concrete examples of this theory and could be viewed as a cookbook for the ‘good story’…. “ The future belongs to the storyteller.” says Rolf Jensen. This means that marketplace, companies and corporations, as well our society will gradually move away from rationality towards a better balance between rational and emotional aspects. I participated in a Value Based Leadership Workshop at CSC which focused on 1) storytelling, 2)CSC’s values and 3) networking Then I decided to make my own project based on these ideas.
The project As a birthday present to myself I would take a leave of absence from my job at CSC and work on this project, using my hands as well as my head to examine the CSC Values and give them physical form. Overall considerations: CSC’s values: WORDS - What do these value words mean to me? What are my own core values? What do my colleagues think? Can I express these values in another way? What do they look like? How do they sound? How can the values be more visible in the organisation? Is it possible for me and my partner to work together – where we can benefit from each other’s know-how? How can I help my friend Thomas – who recently left the UK in order start his own company in Denmark ? Is it possible to use CSC methodology in connection with an artistic expression? Rolf Jensen: ’ Den gode historie handler ikke kun om erhvervslivet, men om hele livet’
CSC Values My objective is to transform the verbally expressed 6 -7 CSC values to an artistic expression. Client Focus: Listens to clients and uses that information to exceed expectations Initiative: Takes personal responsibility to make the right things happen Excellence: Provides the highest standard of service in everything done  Integrity: Is honest and truthful in all that is done Diversity: Values difference in perspective and experience and use that information to foster innovation in solutions Respect: Treats everyone with professionalism Trust: Open-mindedness, ability to listen, open and honest communication – thinking broader than own assignment, loyalty Allan Levann: ’ Rettidig omhu’ Det bedst kendte værdigrundlag som i kun to ord forpligter og lover andet end gennemsnitsnormen i samfundet.
Team Oil painting and installation - Karin Ifanger is Quality and Delivery Manager at CSC Denmark. Employed for more than 30 years… (but has changed position/role many times) Music - Ellen Hess Thaysen works as a pianist, singer, conductor and psychotherapist. Textiles - Thomas Ditlev Sjølander is a costume designer with specialty in embroidery. He just returned to Denmark after spending 4 years in London, where he designed costumes for theatres and films most notably the 2nd Harry Potter film. Inspirational input – 166 employees at CSC Søren Kierkegaard: ’ At turde er at miste fodfæstet for en stund, ikke at turde er at miste livet’

Discover I The 166 questionnaires contained a vast array of colours and symbols, but mostly words. I wanted to paint the answers but I had difficulty in translating the words to colour and form. When a respondent wrote ”red” what did they really mean? Rosa? Rust? Fire-engine red? I decided to paint the many possibilities. In ”Discover I” I painted 3.400 cells – presenting all the answers from the questionnaires. Status After 45 hours: Still a lot of work to do… Detail from Discover I after 45 hours
Discover I: In this phase I became familiar with all the answers from the questionnaires. A slight sorting has taken place… A green corner… a red corner… a blue corner. 98x98: Time: 140 hours!!! 98x98 Discover I – 100 hours later Sidste århundrede fokuserede på det materielle og og det rationelle. Mission statements og ’værdibaseret ledelse’ understreger at vi på vej ind i følelsessamfundet.
Discover II: After painting the very strict square shapes and symbols of ”Discovery I”I wanted to work with more organic shapes. It was great to reduce painting time – and use all colours without limiting myself to the boundaries that I had in ”Discovery I”. 98x98: Time: 17½ hours 98x98 Discover II
Værdier I: This is the first painting that I did on my leave. I was quite happy and full of energy – and blue is the easiest colour to work with and so I painted with blue. Besides… You cannot find a questionnaire without: Blue… and the responses showed that my colleguages are quite good at distinguishing between various blue colours e.g. Cobolt – French Blue – Light blue -Ultramarine… 40x40: Time: 7½ hours 40x40 Værdier I
Værdier II: In this second painting I am focusing on all of the values at once because I am yet too unclear about the meaning of each value individually. I still work with blue paint and using clips from newspapers containing stories about values. My palette has been extended with green – which also is one of the favored colours from the questionnaires. 98x98: Time: 15 hours 98x98 Værdier II
Excellence: This summer has been fantastic.. Football – The tour – Olympic games - And of course I followed Tour de France on daily basis both on TV and in the papers…. The colours black and red are dramatic – the Norwegian guy from Team CSC who continuously had problems was often in the papers… The red bike lanes are comments from the questionnaires re. Excellence in Danish and English… 98x98: Time: 18½ hours 98x98 Excellence
Client Focus: Here I’ve gone over to warmer colors that correspond to client focus. If you look closely you will find out that Ingelise Bogason is just around the corner! This photo was taken before the painting was finished… so you have to look at the real painting…. 98x98: Time: 14½ hours 98x98 Client Focus
CSC Design for painting and embroidery: This is one of the first sketches for painting and embroidery with characters in a hopscotch pattern. It is spring in Denmark and the summer is on it’s way. Thomas’ embroidery machine can manage 16 different threads… and the goal was that all should be used!
CSC Design for painting and embroidery: The green circle around the dots… was removed later… a good advice from our graphical designers.
CSC Design: Here I’m working with: Clear colours Words rather than symbols Strict boundaries The 7 values which are placed as if in a puzzle 7 characters in each frame (with only one exception.) The size of each square is 12 x 12 cm which is the size for small paintings 40x40: Time: 20 hours 40x40 CSC Design
CSC Design: These are color studies. I painted these versions in order to check the validity of the ’CSC red’. In the first painting I used French blue and White instead of black and red and in the second painting I replaced black and red with French blue and Silver. White 40x40: Time: 10 hours Silver 40x40: Time: 10 hours 40x40 CSC Design White 40x40 CSC Design Silver
CSC Design: The ‘CSC red’ was the best and I decided to paint it again in a bigger format and change some of the colours. 98x98: Time: 15 hours 98x98 CSC Design
Initiative: All the comments from the employees relating to Initiative are mainly positive. The colours that I have chosen are very ’ka-pow’ and very visible – like initiative. 40x40: Time: approx. 10 hours 40x40 Initiative
Værdier III: Here the values in English are translated into Danish – even though we are in a global organization we still have own language and own unique culture… Years ago I was told that CSC stands for: a Collection of Small Companies… The colours chosen are ‘cold’ or Nordic 40x40: Time: 10 hours 40x40 Værdier III
Diversity: 49 small paintings12x12 cm in size. The symbols are chosen from the questionnaires – and some of them are small copies of the original paintings. I have painted the most frequent symbols: heart, rainbow, Ying and Yang, arrows, stars and eyes. My idea is to represent the CSC values - Client focus, Initiative, Respect, Integrity, Excellence, Trust and Diversity as symbols. Paintings 49 pieces 12x12: Time: approx 128 hours …PYHHHH 98x98 Diversity
Diversity: The small paintings are placed in a red plexiglas construction and hung on the wall. The idea is that the employees can change the installation and put pictures and values together in new ways – and watch how long one’s own arrangement - or picture of reality – will remain, before another colleague will rearrange it. We are in Legoland! And values are not stable…. Plexiglas 98x98: Time: approx. 138 hours (10 hours drawing/discussion with external supplier ) 98x98 Diversity
Integrity: This painting was made on a typical Danish summer day. I was inspired by shadows made by sunlight coming through the leaves of the trees and I tried to capture it on my canvas even though the shadows kept moving. 98x98: Time: approx 17½ hours 98x98 Integrity
Trust: Truth is the most important value for me! If I loose trust in others or in myself - I loose myself. At the bottom of the painting the CSC explanation of trust is painted. The red dots try to catch your eye and pull you out of the picture (up and right) 98x98: Time: 21 hours 98x98 Trust
Respect: This is the last painting in the series. Ellen conducted a Value Workshop which was based on CSC material from Value Based Leadership Workshop – and customized for her choir, “The Transisters.” I was standing in the background and inspired by the discussions about their values, I painted this picture. 98x98: Time: 7½ hours 98x98 Respect
Textiles
CSC Design: Thomas made a lot of experiments with colours and symbols, thread, fabric, stabilizer, and puff tex.
CSC Design: Here is an example of one of our many experiments…. Made in order to reduce production time (fewer colours)
CSC Design: This is the final design – do you like it?
CSC Design: The embroidered bag – almost final Before we reached the final design, Thomas and I discussed, estimated, re-estimated, made prototypes. We felt that this bag was too big. The final bag for outsourcing was adjusted to a size and shape that would be suitable for use by both men and women and it easily hold 2 ringbinders.
CSC Design: Embroidery on T-shirt. The background colour could be changed to white… but the project team prefer the black version Photo:Sue Manners
Events Karin Ifanger October 7 2004
Meeting with Pete June 10th Pete approved the prototype of the embroidery and our budget was increased. Thomas is a happy man here…. At that time we didn’t realize that we had to outsource the production of bags to the far east.
Meeting June 26th in Fåborg Here we became aware of the outsourcing possibility. The company Kaare Design advised us request a proposal from their partner in India. So we did! However, we should order minimum 500 bags which was much more than we needed. The plan: To thank all the employees who had given us inspiration by answering the questionnaire should receive a bag/’value material’ and take it in hand
June 29 Jette and Ellen discuss which tunes would be best to use as the value song and ”Pensionistsangen” was chosen – but later in the process that was changed. Ellen got the idea to choose the jingle from the Pete’s Corner movie series. The tune is ’Monty Python’ style. Jette Kjældgaard, who is Competence Manager in CSC Denmark has written the value song which will be presented by “Transisters”. In CSC terms Jette is known for her writing skills. Among other things she wrote a song performed by the finest opera singers in Denmark at the latest CSC event at the Danish Royal Theatre.

CSC Design: Theseare color studies. I painted these versions in order to check the validity of the ’CSC red’. In the first painting I used French blue and White instead of black and red and in the second painting I replaced black and red with French blue and Silver. Initiative: All thecomments from the employees relating to Initiative are mainly positive. The colours that I have chosen are very ’ka-pow’ and very visible – like initiative. 40x40: Time: approx. 10 hours 40x40 Initiative

Værdier III: Herethe values in English are translated into Danish – even though we are in a global organization we still have own language and own unique culture… Years ago I was told that CSC stands for: a Collection of Small Companies… The colours chosen are ‘cold’ or Nordic 40x40: Time: 10 hours 40x40 Værdier III

Diversity: 49 smallpaintings12x12 cm in size.

Diversity: The smallpaintings are placed in a red plexiglas construction and hung on the wall.

Integrity: This paintingwas made on a typical Danish summer day. I was inspired by shadows made by sunlight coming through the leaves of the trees and I tried to capture it on my canvas even though the shadows kept moving. 98x98: Time: approx 17½ hours 98x98 Integrity

Trust: Truth isthe most important value for me! If I loose trust in others or in myself - I loose myself. At the bottom of the painting the CSC explanation of trust is painted. The red dots try to catch your eye and pull you out of the picture (up and right) 98x98: Time: 21 hours 98x98 Trust

Respect: This isthe last painting in the series. CSC Design: Theembroidered bag – almost final Before we reached the final design, Thomas and I discussed, estimated, re-estimated, made prototypes. We felt that this bag was too big. The final bag for outsourcing was adjusted to a size and shape that would be suitable for use by both men and women and it easily hold 2 ringbinders.

Meeting with PeteJune 10th Pete approved the prototype of the embroidery and our budget was increased. Thomas is a happy man here…. At that time we didn’t realize that we had to outsource the production of bags to the far east.

Meeting June 26thin Fåborg Here we became aware of the outsourcing possibility. The company Kaare Design advised us request a proposal from their partner in India. So we did! However, we should order minimum 500 bags which was much more than we needed. The plan: To thank all the employees who had given us inspiration by answering the questionnaire should receive a bag/’value material’ and take it in hand

June 29 Jetteand Ellen discuss which tunes would be best to use as the value song and ”Pensionistsangen” was chosen – but later in the process that was changed.
