The Productivity Commission has released its draft report on the design and operation of New Zealand’s regulatory system. The draft report provides practical guidance for government officials involved in designing new regulatory regimes and regulators. The draft also provides a number of recommendations on how to improve the regulatory system as a whole. The ultimate goal of the recommendations is to have more effective regulation.

The Productivity Commission has released a draft report into the processes that New Zealand’s fastest growing cities use to provide land for housing. The report finds that more could be done to enable cities to accommodate growing populations and includes 38 draft recommendations.
The Government has asked the Productivity Commission to investigate ways to improve the way local authorities regulate to make land available for housing. The issues paper outlines areas on which the Commission is seeking feedback.
The Commission has been asked to examine and compare the rules and processes of local government to identify leading practices in planning and taking decisions about making land available for housing, and providing for necessary infrastructure. It has also been asked to look at models adopted by cities overseas that might provide valuable lessons for New Zealand.

Paul Conway from the New Zealand Productivity Commission spoke to Business NZ's Associated Industry Group on 30 October 2014 focussing on productivity in the New Zealand economy, the situation, explanations and the Productivity Commissions’ views about how to seek improvements.
The Productivity Commission has just released its final report on boosting productivity in the services sector. The report shines a spotlight on the critical role that the sector plays in the New Zealand economy and includes a raft of recommendations to lift its performance. Implementing these recommendations would sharpen competition in the sector and help firms in the services sector to more effectively harness information and communications technology (ICT). The Commission believes that these recommendations can make a significant contribution to lifting the sector’s productivity, and to New Zealand’s overall economic performance.

The Effect of Information Technology on Labour Productivity Growth in New Zea...Productivity Commission
This presentation to the Productivity Hub looks at recent work on the effect of information technology (IT) on labour productivity growth in New Zealand, which found no significant effect of IT on labour productivity growth in New Zealand over the period 1980-2010. Existing productivity studies often fail to take into account the effect of shocks and shared characteristics in some industries in a country on other industries in the same country. Using data for 26 industries over the period 1980-2010, the study employs a relatively novel quantitative approach. This presentation examines this parametric study and linkages with work by Statistics New Zealand.

OECD Workshop - Understanding productivity growth – new insights, new questions. The New Zealand Initiative is a business group and think tank committed to developing policies that work for all New Zealanders. At their annual retreat, Murray Sherwin, Chair of the Productivity Commission, spoke about New Zealand's productivity performance in relation to the recent trans-Tasman study and the recently launched inquiry into the services sector.
Regulation touches almost every aspect of our lives and is vitally important in shaping the welfare of communities and the performance of the economy. The Productivity Commission presented the draft report, Towards Better Local Regulation, at the Rethinking Local Government Conference 2013 conference, Tauranga Chamber of Commerce, as part of the consultation process aimed to gather feedback and submissions on the report. The Commission also discussed data from the surveys of business and local government.
In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
