Individuals with disabilities are at significantly higher risk of experiencing abuse and violence. They are between two and four times more likely to experience sexual exploitation compared to those without disabilities. Over 70% of women with disabilities have experienced sexual violence at some point in their lives. The abuse is often longer lasting and more severe, and is commonly committed by someone known to the victim. Programs are needed to educate those with disabilities on how to recognize abuse and access resources like crisis lines and shelters. Effective programs provide safety planning strategies, teach skills to promote self-protection, and empower individuals to set boundaries and advocate for themselves.
