This document discusses organizing a hackathon event at Adelphi University Library to engage students and gather new ideas for tools and apps. A hackathon is an event where programmers collaborate intensively on projects. Benefits include students learning and networking, and the library gaining fresh ideas, engagement, and marketing. Organizing involves getting buy-in, reserving space, budgeting, marketing before and after, providing food, and managing the event. Recommendations include involving a core team early, promoting widely, choosing a good date and room, and the potential for positive outcomes like a new library app or inspiration for future events.

Libraries are constantly evolving, for example, incorporating creative spaces within learning commons and makerspaces. This involves engaging audiences in new ways and advocating for innovative learning and literacy technologies. Hackathons are programming or design competitions to create new apps or tools. The Hack the Library 2015 App Hackathon at Adelphi University will help in this transformative period by providing different perspectives from the library's primary users. The goal for the competition is to generate ideas (rather than completed apps) for any utility applications or mobile or desktop games that can be used in the library. This presentation details the process of organizing an academic library hackathon, including recommendations for implementation, getting university support, and le- gal considerations. Apps pitched at the hackathon are also presented, as are suggestions for creating a successful event.

Using Google Drive for Developing Information Skills in StudentsRuwan Gamage
At the conclusion of the professional postgraduate programmes at National Institute of Library and Information Sciences (NILIS), all students do not achieve the same level of information skills, especially with regard to ICT. An intervention was proposed to overcome this inadequacy; and a two-fold strategy was implemented to gradually increase the information skills of students following the Masters in Teacher Librarianship (MTL) course. The first part was an orientation, while the second part was integration of ICT into the teaching-learning process. Google Apps for Education was used to improve collaboration between students and teachers. Students were appreciative of the new method of teaching & learning, observation, feedback, and other assessments and showed a rapid improvement in their ICT and information skills.
Today, I’m happy to release a data-driven review of VC investment trends in Europe and Israel in 2016. I’ve tried to put some new and useful data points into the deck, so let me know what you think of the new stuff. And please let me know what else you think I should be tracking and showing in the deck next time.
Some key highlights:
Overall, investment volume was up in 4Q, but still below 2Q’s record high
Total VC investment volume into Europe and Israel in 2016 was $14.5B, up from $12.1B in 2015, and increase of 20%
There were six mega-deals (over $100M) in 4Q, and 15 in total in 2016
Excluding the megadeals, investment volume declined in 4Q, the second quarterly decline in a row
Israel saw more VC investment activity than any other country in Europe with $3.9B in 2016. The UK and Germany were next with $3.0B and $2.3B, respectively
US VCs invested in around 11% of European/Israeli venture rounds. Israel, the UK, and Germany led in terms of US VC participation
Fintech was the most frequently funded vertical, with 178 investments. Marketing was second with 109
The categories that showed the most growth in frequency from 2015 to 2016 were Imagining (+400%), Agtech (+475%), and Automotive (+1100%)
You’ll find all that and more in the 61-page report

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Stan - welcome and thank you for attending our presentation!
The term is loosely defined, in fact - it wears many disguises.
Wired - “an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development and hardware development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects.”
Define what we did at Adelphi under this term - close to its classic definition.
With this presentation, we want to actually address the plethora of events of similar type that are increasing in popularity nowadays.
Hacking is no longer a scary, negative word. Hacking implies creativity, innovation, remixing, and more.
I find hackathons to be the most beneficial to patrons and students. Honestly, I can’t even list all the reasons why I personally love attending such events.
So what are some benefits a hackathon can bring to your library? There is a lot that can be said of the value hackathons bring.
Games club promoted their club and taught students how to use Construct 2. Some students used what they learned in the competition.
So what are some benefits a hackathon can bring to your library? There is a lot that can be said of the value hackathons bring. In our case, the main benefits we saw in organizing this event were: to generate some fresh ideas or solutions to some of our internal problems, to engage students more and present the library as an innovative hub and interesting place, to market our services and educate students about what we offer.
important to do this in the very beginning. Get the legal department to create waivers. Show waiver legal created for us. Also contact IT and facilities to make sure you have wifi, power supply adequate for the event.
look into what public libraries do - do they have separate IT, legal and marketing departments - look at nypl - ask debbi?
we had to reserve the room a year in advance!!
make sure you carefully consider your dates. don’t book near exams, major research assignment due dates, holidays, etc. we had to book right before spring break and this most definitely affected registration.
consider multiple venues for best date if your top venue isn’t avail.
library budget, university budget (we approached the provost), also external sponsorship.
make sure to have guaranteed/set budget so you know what you’re working with. We needed to make sure budget was confirmed from Provost, library before we started
look into what public libraries do - do they have separate IT, legal and marketing departments - look at nypl - ask debbi?
One of the key draws for student attendance will be prizes. Have awesome prizes and make sure most of your budget is spent on this! We had several prizes - cool technology for first place (smart watch) and amazon gift cards for second and third place. We thought students interested in hackathons would be interested in tech prizes. Be careful not to plan prizes too far in advance if they are tech related or they might be outdated by the time the event comes around. You can set aside a certain amount of the budget for prizes but don’t focus on one thing too early on. If we’d ordered smart watches one year in advance of the event when we booked the room, they would have been obsolete.
various ways to do this - in house (especially if you have a marketing/outreach librarian), we had a student intern from the graphic design department, you can also go through your school’s marketing department or be creative - we reached out to graphic design dept and arranged with the prof. to assign a hackathon branding package assignment to the students
we had cool sign, website banner, leaflets, print posters.
also include post-event marketing (banner of winners).
didn’t take that much advantage of. newsday didn’t happen. adelphi didn’t promote after that. encourage Dean to meet with other external administrators.
winners invited to present to library staff.
We had to go through our school’s caterer which took up a sizeable chunk of our budget. If you don’t have to do this, you can just order pizza and keep more of the budget for awesome prizes!
make sure you have some food or energizing drinks/snacks for participants
we had volunteers from the library and external (ed tech program) and judges from relevant departments (library, IT, ed tech). Try to get judges and volunteers from various departments. This will show ppl what library is doing
We prepared a short ten?min. presentation from the library. Show an outline of this presentation. We included a portion which was suggestions for hackathon ideas. We solicited library department heads to put together some ideas for web apps that students could work on at the event. This helped create a sense of involvement from the library and build a team
show project management spreadsheet in Excel
managing registration, submissions, etc - Hacker League
Stan - there is a lot that we learned through this experience (share our doc about positives and lessons).
Involve everyone as early as possible and update them
Marketing and promotion - we shouldn’t have relied on people that didn’t have a direct buy-in our success; start marketing early and push on that front; also capitalize on the success afterwards through promotion
Our date was not the best. We should have really booked as soon as we had the initial idea, even before getting people interested and having a budget. Book early and make sure your room can support what you need (wifi, electrical, etc.)
