Think Like a DJ…and Remix Your Chosen Field
Whether you’re a musician, a journalist, a filmmaker…all forms of media now have worldwide audiences thanks to digital technology. But what does this mean for you? How can you brand yourself and your work so that it goes beyond Georgia to the world at large? Derek Woodgate is a futurist: which means that he won’t tell you not how to keep up with changes in your field. Instead, he’ll tell you how you can reconceptualize how you think about your chosen media profession. And soon, you will be the change and the world will follow.

FutureEverything - The City as Living Lab or Play SpaceDrew Hemment
My keynote presentation at Metropolis Lab in Copenhagen on 28 June on the FutureEverything festival as a living lab, an approach developed in collaboration with ImaginationLancaster.
A brief presentation I gave at the 2006 O'Reilly Emerging Telephony Conference about a prototype system built in Asterisk for geotagging audio recordings.
In Media Arts, the creative process is often relegated to the realm of the unexplainable, shrouded in mystery and mysticism, yet there is a long tradition of attempts to more formally model artistic and creative processes. Philosophers have developed a a number of normative models for artistic creation, from Hegel's characterization of art as a path to self-consciousness to Dewey's representation of art as the sum of our intentions and experiences. I will discuss models (both classical and contemporary) of creative practice and experience and their potential application to new media arts and technology. These new models that connect the roles of creator and viewer/participant have redefined participatory design, art, and theater. This introduces a new role for a new breed of artist: to catalyze new ideas and foster creative collaboration across disciplines.
This plenary presentation at the Alberta oil and gas industry 2007 Spring Noise Conference was clearly out of the ordinary, but got a good response (including an invite to return in 2009). While Alberta has strong noise regs, the presentation addressed the fact that when industrial noise is the loudest component in a quiet soundscape, neighbors ' experiences need to be considered--reliance on dB-level limits is not enough. A key part of the presentation looks at the evolution of the rural soundscape over the past three generations, the changing nature and context of human-made sound, and the natural changes in people's reactions to these changing noise sources.
Publication Marketing Tool Workshop. Research Visibility and Improving Citations Records. 09 Dec 2014 to 16 Jan 2015. Humanities Research Cluster, Research Management & Innovation Complex University of Malaya.
This is a presentation of initial pairings we put together for the ICT & Art Connect project stand at the EU ICT 2013 showcase event on the new Digital Agenda. In some cases, these art-tech pairs had just met and had to only talk about their own background rather than new any new ideas for a project they had, but once paired some very good connections developed.

In this original Digital Art and Philosophy class, we will become familiar with different forms of digital art and related philosophical issues. Digital art is anything related to computers and art such as using a computer to create art or an art display that is digitized. Philosophical aspects arise regarding art, identity, performance, interactivity, and the process of creation. Students may respond to the material in essay, performance, or digital art work (optional). Instructor: Melanie Swan. Syllabus: www.MelanieSwan.com/PCA

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

6. Southscapes
Beyond merely aesthetic contemplation.
Building a narrative about the other.
A perspective where art becomes an empowerment tool.
Use sound as element of exploration
through levels of research.
[Sound art, Soundscape, Radio Art]
Post digital paradigm
7.
8. New Media
The New Media perspective enables to connect with
grassroots initiatives where practitioners are empowered
to create tools for sonic and data exploration, to table a
remapping of spaces, specially on remote locations.
Format of New Media practices:
Workshops on digital Tools empowerment,
Use of electronics in daily life
Do it yourself (DIY) & Do it with Others (DIWO)
9. Locative Media
-Use of environmental data and remap
visualizing the territory and soundscape.
-Provide educational tools for collaborative
media to map a public space.
-Placement, how individuals engage in
media projects with a location to become
part of the space.
16. It is not production of an art work in the classi-
cal sense. A workshop enables an understanding
of both ecology and entanglement of people,
ideas, tools, materials, systems and processes.
17.
18. Workshops also may cloud artistic or personal
objectives- including some of the community en-
gagement agendas from institutional - political
organisations that work with art and culture.
19. Any learning that implies creative empowerment
should not be concerned with idea transmission.
But is oriented to a construction and reconstruc-
tion of knowledge through experience.
25. No prior experience on
electronics is required
~15 participants
What we are building:
Amplifier circuit
Piezo Microphone
Coil Inductor
Light Synthesizer
35. On the performativity: Allan Kaprow sought to
elaborate public performances towards an inte-
gration of art and life.
Johan Huizinga’s notions of play: (Found in his
book Homo Ludens “Man the player”) points out
the need of play for the generation of culture.
Huizinga’s work proposes a study of the play-ele-
ment in culture.
36. According to Huizinga; Play is in fact freedom, is dis-
tinct from “ordinary” (life both as locality and du-
ration), play creates order (demand order absolute
and supreme), play is connected with no material in-
terest, no profit can be gained from it.
37. Geroge Caillois key ideas about play: Agon (com-
petition), Alea (Chance), Mimicry (mimesis), llimx
(“whirlpool” the sense of altering perception, verti-
go and altering perception).
Paidia - uncontrolled fantasy.
Ludus - requires an ever greater amount of effort,
patience, skill, or ingenuity.
