5. The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding the
Earth. There are many gases in the atmosphere, but
nitrogen and oxygen are essential for living things
(biocoenosis).
There is air to breathe and water to drink. Furthermore,
weather phenomena occur in this layer.
However, we need to look after the atmosphere because
it protects us from harmful radiation from the Sun.
Class discussion. Read, draw a mind map in group and
discuss about looking after the atmosphere.

6. a. Weather is what the atmosphere is like in a place at a
particular time. _____
b. Weather never changes. _____
c. Weather depends on the seasons (winter, spring, summer,
autumn). _____
Thinking twins. Read and say if these sentences are true or false.

7. 1-2-group. Read and match the elements of weather, the
instruments to measure them and their units of measure.

ELEMENTS OF
WEATHER
INSTRUMENTS UNITS OF MEASURE
The wind (moving
air)
Atmospheric pressure
(air’s weight)
Temperature
Precipitation (rain)
barometer – rain gauge –
thermometer – weather
vane and anemometer
cardinal points (N, S, W, E)
and km/hour – degrees –
ℓ/m2 - millibars
8. Colour cards. Listen and raise the correct colour card according to the
elements of weather.

9. a. Hot air weighs less and rises.
b. There are a lot of children wearing coats, scarves and hats.
It’s very cold.
c. There are a lot of clouds and rain because millibars are low.
d. Oh! It’s raining cats and dogs!
e. It’s measured in degrees.
f. It’s measured in ℓ/m2.
g. We use the cardinal points to measure its direction.
h. We use the km/hour to measure its speed.

words to describe climate and weather.

Mountain climate – Subtropical climate – Typical Mediterranean climate – Oceanic
climate – Dry Mediterranean climate –Continental Mediterranean climate
This is the climate of the
Balearic Islands, the
Mediterranean coast and
some inland areas of the
Iberian Peninsula.
- Temperatures: mild in
winter and high in
summer.
- Precipitation: low and
irregular. There is
usually drought in
summer.

inland areas of the Iberian
Peninsula.

irregular. There is also
drought in summer.
Sometimes, there is
snow in winter.
This is the climate of the
southern areas of the
Mediterranean coast.
- Temperatures: mild in
winter and high in
summer.
- Precipitation: Very low
and irregular. The
summer is very dry.

and regular, except in
summer.
Areas above 1,500 metres

a. Climate change affects the sea levels in Latin America. ___
b. Climate change is more dangerous than wars. ___
c. In the south of America, intense rainfall is not a problem. ___
d. The UNHCR thinks that a lot of people will be affected by the climate change. ___

CLIMATE CHANGE CREATES MORE REFUGEES THAN A WAR
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
estimates that between 250 million and 1 billion people in the
world will lose their homes or be forced to move to a different
territory in the next 50 years.
Latin America in danger
Adapted from El País,
20th October 2014
The global climate is
changing and the effects
can be seen in Latin
America. Sea levels are
rising, and drought is a
problem for food
production in Central
America and the
Caribbean. In the south,
intense rainfall is
causing serious flooding.
If the global temperature
continues to rise, this
region is going to be one
of the most affected
areas in the world. In a
few years, climate change
may cause that a lot of
people move to a
different territory. This
also happens during big
wars.

23. Flora depends on the climate. There are four types of
vegetation in Spain: Mediterranean vegetation, Oceanic
vegetation, Mountain vegetation and Subtropical vegetation.
