The Preface to the Lyrical Ballads is an essay, composed by William Wordsworth, for the second edition of the poetry collection Lyrical Ballads, and then greatly expanded in the third edition of 1802. It has come to be seen as a de facto manifesto of the Romantic movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Author
● William Wordsworth, born 1770
● Lost his mother at the age of 8, a fact that influenced in his writing
● Founder of english romanticism
● Went to France during the period of the french Revolution, giving him
interest and sympathy for love and trouble.
● Revolutionized the writing of poetry.
● Made the language of his poems to be accessible to ‘common man’
● In his poems he brought back men and women to nature, focusing on the
individual
● Credited on establishing the romantic movement in England
3. Romanticism
● He was one of the founders of English Romanticism.
● He defined poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.”
● He was one of the first poets to try to make poetry accessible to the common man.
● He wrote in a language that was part of "everyday" speech.
● He included a lot of the big Romantic themes—like nature and emotion.
● He developed the Romantic project of bringing man/woman back to nature, focusing on
the individual, and making poetry accessible to all.
● He introduced new ideas by exploring the ideal of freedom in his poems.
● In “A complaint”, he makes use of strong emotions. By using powerful words, Wordsworth
tries to convey a message.
● In “A complaint”, his choice of words brought up fierce emotions in his readers.
5. Title of the poem
The title of this poem is relevant to the understanding of it, as
it gives an introduction and summarizes the main idea that the
text tackles. In this poem, Wordsworth complains on what
makes him be and feel poor of love, and wondering why he was
left by his big love. In this poem he wants to find an answer on
these questions about the presence of love in his life and what
made him lose it.
6. Metaphors
“A fountain at my fond heart door who’s only business
was to flow.”
This metaphor suggests that his love was something
consistent, constant and natural in the personna’s life.
Without this love he felt poor, empty. The choice of
words “fond heart” and “only business” portray the idea
of a loving and committed relationship.
"There is a change-and I am poor":
Through this metaphor we can see how the voice has
become poor, although not materially but emotionally.
The word "poor" is used to make a reference to how the
voice has lost something and this loss ultimately made
him poor. The thing that he/she has lost is the person
she/he loves most which caused the person to be
emotionally drained. The voice is poor romantically,
having lost the person that made him the happiest.
Literary
devices
7. Parallelism:
"Murmuring, sparkling, living love"
In this phrase, the literary device of parallelism is employed. Through this phrase
we can see how the love the voice used to enjoy was vivid and enthusiastic. It was
dynamic and changing, always bringing something new. It wasn't dull or static. It
irradiated joy. It was a love that brought liveliness into the voice's life. The use of
"ing" makes emphasis on how all these characteristics of that love are steadfast
and persistent. It doesn't cease to be joyful.
8. Voice: someone who has lost his/her love
Addressee: his/her beloved
Tone: helplessness and resignation, regretful,
nostalgic
Theme: love, loss, grief and regret
10. The drawing represents the main idea that
the poem transmits. Love broke the voice´s
heart. He felt empty, as the personna´s heart
constantly beat for his love. The drawing
represents how the loss of his love made him
become emotionally poor, he had nothing
else remaining. He had a full and happy
heart, until he was left, and his heart became
totally broken for only one reason; the loss of
his love.
