Korea has a history dating back 3000 BC when immigrants from China introduced new rice harvesting techniques. In 200 AD, emerging Korean states developed their own writing system and laws using Chinese characters. The country experienced invasions from Mongols in 1231 and Japan between 1592-1598, when Japan defeated China and ended its influence over Korea. Modern events include President Kim Dae-jung winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his Sunshine Policy of engagement with North Korea.
