                                                  Sept 2011
 The term NANO is derived from the ancient Greek word
    meaning dwarf: think everything phenomenally
    small……..instruments, products, materials, atoms
 Nanomaterials & nanotechnologies are terms used by
engineers almost everywhere on account of recent major
advances in the materials science community:
Instrumentation / AFM, sol gel disposition / soft lithography
    and so on
 These technologies are multidisciplinary, offering
opportunities in every business sector . They are
revolutionising how we manage our environment and
business processes and offer some truly compelling value for
    organizations.

                                                               Sept 2011
Why is it important?

 New technologies can reduce communication costs by £millions per
annum ( Let us show you!)
 New ways to clean, using 40% less water
 Remove need for aggressive cleaning chemicals
 Reduce cleaning cycles by 50%
 New R&D products, new processes, new solutions
 Reduced fuel and oil use, ( c11% ( Let us show you!), + increased time
      between maintenance cycles
 Make light more efficient ( Let us show you!)
 Positive impact on Healthcare / Construction / material design
 Bigger than the ICT sector within a decade
 Countless new applications to address sustainability issues

                                                                               Sept 2011
Where has it come from?
Nano materials have always been with us: the
building blocks of life = atoms & molecules.
What’s new: our ability to see and manipulate these
    particles using:
 Advanced instrumentation
 Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM)
 Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM)
 Torsional Harmonic Cantilever (THC)
 Enabling Single molecule imaging, manipulation
and the entire chemical reaction in real-time

 Applications depend on materials and size of project
 One needs to first define the result required
 Most large applications require an electric atomiser

 Note the three types of coating functions:
 1. Hydrophobic ( water repelling…drops form beads….using Sio2 etc ( so easy cleaning,
    less detergents, labour….
 2. Hydrophilic ( water attracting : drops flatten out) Tio2… the functions are opposite! (
the force of the water to the surface on impact removed dirt which then falls with gravity
    and rain)
 3. Photocatalytic ( UV-induced reactions that cause decomposition of dirt
molecules….great for outside glass & concrete)

                          Sept 2011
Abrasion can remove coatings. Anti-bacterial charge can fail after 12 months.
Surface tension can be measured to determine fatigueless . Follow up cleaning of fatigued areas with
Isopropanol, pre-cleaner is recommended. New applications may be required annually depending on
materials and environment. Coatings generally are food safe.

                                                                                                 Sept 2011

Hi Dermott,
As you can see from the spreadsheet attached we have had some really good results from the test 24hrs after the
    application, really impressive.
We will continue to test on a weekly basis for the next three weeks and I will forward the results to you as we gather
   them.
Cheers

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Introduction Thanks to Qube…. I am not a technical person you may be pleased to hear! When I switch the electricity at home I am not that interested once it comes on! Similarly with TV. I switch it on and don’t think about how it all works. It is the value of technology to business, human life and society that I am excited about, not how it actually works, but how it can deliver value.
