A presentation for our staff about appropriately reaching ALL of our parents/guardians in our diverse population. All materials were provided by Teaching Tolerance; a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center
Family engagement is an effective strategy to increase student achievement and improve schools. However, many schools struggle with how to engage all families in meaningful ways. The National PTA Standards for Family-School Partnerships provide a framework for structuring and assessing family engagement. This session will explore how to use the National Standards strategies centered around arts education programs and activities to fully engage all families in their children’s education.

The trinity of family and community engagement is relational trust, promising practices, and compliance. It's time to rethink family and community engagement - moving from management and presentation of information to relationships and capacity building, as well as, helping families, communities, staff, and students learn together.
Increasing Parent and Teacher Involvement: Employing Research Discoveries to ...Bilinguistics
Involving caregivers and teachers in the therapeutic process is a major component of successful therapy. However, social, familial, personal, and environmental factors can make caregiver and teacher involvement difficult.
In this course we identify the benefits of family involvement and will then provide five research-based strategies for how to improve our interactions with families and teachers. We refer to the strategies as SMILE (Sign, Model, Imitate, Label, and Expand). These strategies have been found to improve communication skills in young children. We will define the SMILE strategies, provide the rationale behind them, and demonstrate how to implement the strategies when serving an early-childhood population.

During your course of study in the M.Ed. program you have examined.docxmadlynplamondon
During your course of study in the M.Ed. program you have examined issues relating to ethics in the educational setting and the importance of promoting diversity. In a one- to two-page paper reflect upon what you have learned throughout your coursework related to ethical issues in education, and discuss the fundamental manner in which your ideas, values, beliefs, practices, and etc. have or have not changed as a result.
Working for Early Head Start in Springfield, Illinois, I had the pleasure of working with many different nationalities. Each month, I invited a different family to come and speak to our class and share some traditions and items from their where they live. The students loved listening to other families and the families enjoyed sharing their heritage with the students. I learned that incorporating other history into our classroom made the parent/care giver more willing to participate and give back to the classroom. One particular lesson plan, one of my Hispanic families came to teach our children how to count and speak and spell their name. The children were excited to go home and teach their parents. Listening to some of the parents share their beliefs as well as stories that may go on back in their country it gave me more respect for my country.
For my future position, I will still incorporate different ethnicities into my lesson plan and have different families come into the classroom and share their history. One thing that I have also thought about is having a different type of bring your parent to school day. This will allow the parent/child to see what actually goes on in a child’s classroom. This will also allow the parent to interact with their child and their child’s friends. This will also promote a positive learning environment for the student.
Identify and describe at least three main strengths in relation to the theme of your portfolio.
Three main strengths that stick out to me are resilience, being able to incorporate, and being self-motivated.
Resilience is being able to recover quickly. Being an educator Resiliency should be a vital strength. Being an educator and having the ability to recover from a bad day at school requires determination. Educators have to wear more than one hat in the classroom while trying to educate their students. Educators have to deal with more disciplinary problems in the classroom. Being able to recovery from dealing with a behavior issue and still maintain your classroom has become very challenging.
Incorporation- Children are learning in many different ways. It is the Educator’s role to incorporate and reach each student so that they can learn. One thing educators are now seeing a lot more of are, children with more learning disabilities. It has been more stressful for educators to research and learn different learning styles and find learning resources for their students.
Being Self-motivation sometimes is not as easy as we would like for it to be. Especially being a educator. I ...

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Riviera Elementary School is a public elementary school in Palm Bay, FL.
758 students attend this school and identify mostly as Multiracial; Asian/Pacific
Islander; African American; and White, non-Hispanic.
13% of the students are “limited in English proficiency”. 81% of the 758 students
get free or reduced lunch prices. Making this a Title One school.
Mission Statement: We are a gathering of diverse people and backgrounds brought
together to provide guidance in a collaborative method, to the school community, to
foster an environment that will allow our students to develop to their fullest.
There has been a change in the ESE (not gifted) population, an increase from 14% to
20% to 22% due to the addition of two VE classes, a Blended VPK/EELP and a high
needs EELP class.
3. WWhhaatt iiss VVEE??
VE stands for Varying Exceptionalities.
The VE classroom meets the needs of students with different
exceptionalities with a smaller teacher-student ratio.
There are three VE classrooms at Riviera and I was able to complete
my 15 hours of engagement in Mrs. Whites 3rd grade VE class.
Mrs. White has a full time assistant teacher, Miss Dennis. There are
13 students in her classroom that range between the ages of 8-10
There is a wide variety of ethic backgrounds in her classroom. They
include African American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern.

• Students are labeled as Slow Learning Disability (SLD) or
Developmentally Delayed (DD). Although they’re labeled as SLD and
DD, the teachers have an idea of what type of disability each child
has. Some of the disabilities in the classroom include Other Health
Impaired (OHI), Emotionally Behavior Disorders (EBD), Language
Impaired (LI), Autism, and Cerebral Palsy.
• Each student in Mrs. White’s class are considered persons with
disabilities based on I.D.E.A. because each student needs additional
or different services to participate in school.

• I chose to volunteer in
a VE classroom to
better understand the
services provided and
how this program
works in our public
school system.
I volunteered in Mrs.
White’s VE classroom
on Wednesday’s from
10:00am-12:00pm for 8
weeks.
I was able to work hands
on in the classroom
helping students with
science activities and
guided reading groups.
6. SSeerrvviiccee iinn AAccttiioonn
I was able to help Mrs. White and Miss Dennis in some creative
hands-on science instruction and activities. I also helped with
guided reading groups.
Students were learning about the solar system, stars, and planets.
I also worked with students one on one to help promote
engagement and participation.

• I have never worked one on one with children with learning
disabilities. To be honest, I think I was more scared of the
unknown then anything else.
• I feel as a future educator it’s very important to educate
yourself and volunteer as much as possible with children with
disabilities to understand that these children are ALL
awesome and need loving and caring teachers to help them
learn.
• Every Wednesday after leaving Mrs. White’s class I felt a
sense of fullness. It was a very rewarding volunteer
opportunity.
• The experience that had the most impact on me was with one
student in particular. He is language impaired and the minute
he experienced an “ah-ha” moment in reading was priceless.
He was able to read a sentence to me with comprehension
and fluency. He said, “I understand it and read it fast.”

• I completed this project for EEX4070.
• The three topics I understand better now through service
learning are instructional adaptations, Self Contained Varying
Exceptionalities, and emotional behavior disorders.
• Instructional adaptations means more then just the teacher
having a positive attitude to meet the needs of each child. It’s
adapting materials and classroom environment to help
accommodate the needs of each child to be successful.

From this experience I was also able to understand what it
means to teach in a self contained varying exceptionalities
classroom. This class is designed for students in schools who
would not be successful in the general education classrooms
due to academic ability, health issues and/or behavioral
problems. These classes are smaller and have more teachers to
assist. There are always at least 2 adults in the room. The
students are taught at their ability level, regardless of age or
grade. They’re also taught in small groups and 1:1 when
necessary. In addition to the regular education curriculum, many
supplemental materials are used to teach these students.
The students remain in the room all day. They are mainstreamed
for Special Areas, such as OT, PT, speech, and ESOL services.
Sometimes with a paraprofessional to help them be more
successful.

My perspective on civic engagement has always been positive and
it should be something every citizen does. It helps promote
relationships with the community and helps develop connections.
The purpose of civic engagement is increasing civic participation by
encouraging participation in civil society. By volunteering and
participating in TIA project, I am more knowledgeable and aware
about how children with disabilities learn in a VE classroom.
I think this service learning project promotes student learning
through active participation in a meaningful way. I would
recommend anyone getting a job in the education field to participate
in the TIA project in order to enhance their general knowledge,
course content, and self awareness in the community.
What you learn through actively participating in service learning you
can’t learn from reading a simple textbook. Hands-on experience is
the best way to improve one’s life.
11. FFiinnaall TThhoouugghhttss && RReefflleeccttiioonnss
• I’ve been volunteering for a long time, but
never to help benefit children with
disabilities. This experience has made
me want to help children with disabilities
and get my friends and family to help as
well.
• I really enjoyed working with Mrs. White’s
class and I promised the students I would
come back once a month to help with
science experiments; not because I have
to for a class, but because I WANT to.
