Mexico has a developed banking system consisting of commercial banks, development banks, and other financial institutions. The finance and insurance sector comprises establishments involved in financial transactions and facilitating financial transactions. Data on the sector is collected through economic censuses conducted every five years, including on credit institutions, insurance institutions, and other financial services. The 2004 census found over 10,000 economic units in the finance and insurance sector employing over 275,000 people and generating over 686 billion pesos in turnover, with multiple banking, insurance, and stock market intermediation representing large portions. An update based on the 2009 census is forthcoming.
