Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a
progressive brain disorder
that affects an individual's
memory, thinking, and
behavior. It is the most
common cause of
dementia, a term used to
describe a decline in
cognitive function that
interferes with daily life.
Alzheimer's disease affect the
nervous system. It primarily
impacts the brain, which is a
crucial part of our nervous
system. Alzheimer's involves the
progressive degeneration and
deterioration of brain cells and
their connections, leading to the
decline of cognitive functions
such as memory, thinking, and
behavior.
As a result, the communication
and coordination within the
nervous system are disrupted,
causing various symptoms and
challenges for individuals with the
disease. It's a complex condition
that requires ongoing research
and support to better understand
and find effective treatments.
The exact cause of Alzheimer's
disease is not yet fully
understood, but researchers
believe it involves a combination
of genetic, lifestyle, and
environmental factors. The
disease is characterized by the
accumulation of abnormal protein
clumps, called beta-amyloid
plaques, and tangled bundles of
fibers, called tau tangles, in the
brain.
Currently, there is no known cure for
Alzheimer's disease. However,
research is ongoing to better
understand the disease, develop
treatments that can slow down its
progression, and ultimately find a cure.
Early diagnosis and management
strategies, such as medication,
therapy, and lifestyle modifications,
can help improve the quality of life for
individuals living with Alzheimer's and
their caregivers.
This course on neurobiology
has helped me with my
understanding of Alzheimer’s
Disease from a more
scientific and holistic point of
view. Now I am eager to learn
more in depth information
about the parts of the brain
that are affected or
connected to Alzheimer’s
disease.
Knowing how neurons work
and make connections &
how the different parts of the
brain work has opened up a
new door of learning.Rather
than just worrying about
treating the symptoms I am
more open to working with
them. This course has
shown me in more detail
what the brain does.
By having a better
understanding of
the science of
Alzheimer’s
disease, I feel that I
have a better
understanding of
the whole picture.
