Global Brigades is a non-profit organization that sends university student volunteers on medical brigades to developing countries to provide healthcare and community development services. They operate brigades in Honduras, Panama, Ghana, India, and Vietnam that last 7 days. During a brigade, student volunteers set up temporary clinics and provide care to local patients, collecting medical data to track health trends. Brigades aim to serve communities with limited healthcare access.

HOW FAR ARE WE IN THE DONATION OF ORGANS IN INDIA? – A REVIEW
ABSTRACT
Organ Donation Day is observed every year on 13th day of August. Due to lack of awareness and widespread idea about the organ donation, there are myths and fears in peoples’ mind about donating the organs. The aim of this day is to motivate fellow human beings to pledge and donate the organs after death and to create awareness about the importance of organ donation. Indian Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA) 1994 & 2011 - was enacted to provide a system of removal, storage and transplantation of human organs for therapeutic purposes and for the prevention of commercial dealings in human organs. THOA is now adopted by all States except Andhra and J&K, who have their own similar laws.
Organ Donation is the process of surgically donating a donor's organs like heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and pancreas, after the donor dies for the purpose of transplanting them into another person who is in need of an organ. According to a survey in India every year about 500,000 people die because of non-availability of organs, 200,000 people die due to liver disease and 50,000 people die because of heart disease.
Brain Stem death is recognized as a legal death in India under the THOA like many other countries, which has revolutionized the concept of organ donation after death. After natural cardiac death only a few organs/tissues can be donated (like cornea, bone, skin and blood vessels) whereas after brain stem death almost 37 different organs can be donated including vital organs such as kidneys, heart, liver and lungs. Despite a facilitatory law, organ donation from deceased persons continues to be very poor. The organ donor can play a big role in saving other’s life.
To increase the awareness about organ donation to general public and health care professionals, the Central Government of India made - NOTTO: National
Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization, ROTTO: Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization and National Organ Transplant Programmes along with various public health programmes incorporating the role of public health professionals all across the country.

Our Healthy Jackson County Presentation - HIT Jan 2023KC Digital Drive
In our first presentation, Jannette Berkley-Patton, PhD., of University of Missouri - Kansa City's School of Medicine will describe Our Healthy Kansas City Eastside, a set of projects organized by Dr. Berkley-Patton and UMKC and funded by Jackson County (MO) to improve health status in some of the most challenging neighborhoods in Kansas City. An initial round of funding was dedicated to improving the coverage of vaccinations in these same neighborhoods. Based on the success of that effort, this current round of funding expands into key health screenings, initiatives in maternal health, chronic disease prevention, and digital inclusion. A number of research projects are included in the program. The County grant is for $5 million and is expected to be followed up with another $5 million to expand further.
The success of the program is based on strong sector-led support (health care, education, faith communities, business) directly in the community through networking and events, as well as participation by multiple relevant community entities, like KC Digital Drive. KCDD will be active in both the chronic disease prevention and digital inclusion aspects of the program.
Dr. Berkley-Patton is a professor in the departments of Biomedical and Health Informatics at the School of Medicine. A fuller biography is available here.

In March this year, Harbinger Consultants trialled an initiative in health promotion to raise awareness of dementia. The initiative sought to: raise money for dementia research through a sponsored 50km bike ride; and raise awareness of brain health and dementia through a BBQ breakfast event. Based on an action research approach, the idea of the Brainy Breakfast BBQ was to bring people together in a convivial environment to exchange information, share stories and generally catch up. This document reports on the event and provides recommendations for ongoing development of this initiative.

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Editor's Notes
Most are located in the State of Paraiso within driving distance from our compound, one hour east of the capital Tegucigalpa We only work in communities where we ’ve been invited and have strong relationships with community leaders to help coordinate and promote the brigade before we arrive Global Brigades chooses villages in need of extensive health infrastruce and is commited over the 5 years, to develop complete clean water systems and renovate all houses to include concrete floors, clean-burning stoves, latrines and water storage units in 20 of our villages
Location is typically a community school or church Triage Notes: Triage: BP, Allergies, Weight, Main Complaints Temperature on babies and elderly Sugar on diabetics and elderly BP on anyone over 40 Basic knowledge of Spanish is helpful here for communication reasons and because some of the names may be unfamiliar. Consultation Notes: Consultation: Doctors diagnose patients and prescribe appropriate prescriptions Students can either act as translators for the doctor or they may shadow the doctor. Both positions offers students a first hand experience in medicine. Doctors only treat cases within the abilities of the brigade. If further treatment is required, patients will be referred to Cl ί nica Santa Rosa de Lima. Pharmacy Notes: Prescriptions are filled by students under the supervision of a doctor or pharmacist. They will approve the final product and answer any student questions. All patient records need to be entered into our database. This information is used to generate our final report. Separate medicines by class Assign group volunteers to fill prescriptions Receive prescriptions from patients throughout the day and fill accordingly- keep families together When in doubt, go back to the medical professional who wrote the prescription and ask Make sure all patients thoroughly understand the directions for the medicines they are prescribed via translators Dental Station Notes: Often patients will walk hours looking for dental care at a brigade. As such, we strongly encourage Medical Brigades to recruit Dentists and pre-dental students to supplement a Medical Brigade.
Goals of PH Education: Emphasize crucial role of the patient in improving and maintaining his or her own health status Increase the early detection of certain clinical conditions and diseases Encourage the patient's use of effective prevention and treatment regimens Increase the patient's understanding of his or her own health status Involve the patient in a team-approach to his or her health care
*Global Brigades is 100% student funded and led. We are not reliant on any outside donations or grants to perpetuate our programming. As such, we focus on empowering students with the tools and resources to solicit support for their individual brigades. The "sustainability expense" enables us to maintain offices in Honduras, hire full-time native directors, provide housing for our long-term volunteers and manage the relationships and health trends in the communities we serve year-round.
