The underground railroad
Slavery began in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619 and was practiced throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The Underground Railroad helped slaves escape to freedom in Canada through a network of safe houses. It required courage for slaves to flee, traveling at night and relying on conductors to guide them along routes called "lines" to places known as "stations." Harriet Tubman was a famous conductor who led over 300 slaves to freedom after escaping slavery herself.

Porfirio Diaz ruled Mexico from 1877 to 1911, a period known as the Porfiriato. During his rule, the Mexican economy grew as new infrastructure like railways and telephones were built. In 1910, the Mexican Revolution began as Francisco Madero led forces against Diaz, who had failed to keep his promise of free elections. Victoriano Huerta then overthrew Madero in 1913 with the support of landowners and foreign companies. Pancho Villa led peasant rebels against the Federal Army and advocated for the poor, fighting for agrarian reform for decades. Emiliano Zapata also started recruiting an army in 1909 to overthrow Diaz and push for land reform.
