2. Abstract
This monograph tries to provide an
accurate translation of the first chapter of
the thesis: “An ethobotanical Study of the
Yucatan peninsula and Belize” written by
Angela Brener Suarez.
3. What is translation?
Translation is a process that covers the
interpretation of the meaning of a text in a
language called the source text, and the
production of a new equivalent text into
another language, the target language.
4. About the text to translate
It consists of two parts. The first part is an
introduction which examines the role of
ethnobotany and familiarizes the reader with
the study area. In the second part the author
presents 153 plants species that are used
medicinally in the Yucatan region.
5. Justification
The translation of this text was a requested by
permaculture workers who grow medicinal
plants. They are workers that use farming
techniques that require no machine and no
chemical, their system do not create pollution in
the environment.
6. Permaculture
"Permaculture is a philosophy of working
with, rather than against nature; of
protracted and thoughtful observation
rather than protracted and thoughtless
labor; of looking at plants and animals in
all their functions, rather than treating
any area as a single-product system." Bill
Mollison (1991).
7. Relevance
In the Yucatan Peninsula the use of
plants for medicinal purpose is very
common and the use of medicinal
plants has been an important
component in our culture.
8. Objective
To provide this information to people who are
interested in the important role that medicine
plants play in our region
To identify the different techniques that I
applied in my translation.
9. Vianey and Darbelnet
There are two methods of translating,
direct and oblique translation.
• The direct procedures are: Borrowing,
calque, literal translation.
• The oblique translation consists of:
transposition, Equivalence, Modulation
and Adaptation
