Researchers have discovered two new bases of DNA, the seventh and eighth. They have also identified a gene, DMRT1, that is required to maintain male sex throughout life. When this gene is lost, male cells take on female characteristics and begin producing female hormones like estrogen. This could help explain certain sexual disorders and cancers related to the development and maintenance of sexual characteristics.
