The scalloped hammerhead shark has a distinctive hammer-shaped head, with olive, bronze or brown coloring and white belly. It lives in warm tropical waters off Australia and Central America, ranging in size from 3 to 26 feet. Experts estimate that 73 million sharks are killed annually, including 3 million hammerheads. Hammerheads prey on fish, squid, octopus and crustaceans, and have even been known to eat their own young. Their wide-set nostrils and eyes at the end of their hammer-shaped heads help them detect prey and threats. However, their large size makes them vulnerable to overfishing, and their valuable fins have led to the hammerhead being classified as an endangered species.
