SCHOOL SUBJECTS
Lessons in schools vary throught the years. In primary school students are taught the basic
lessons. Some of these are :
Modern Greek
Maths
Religion
History
Geography
There are also other kinds of lessons such as:
Physical Education (P.H.)
Music
Visual Arts
In high school more lessons are added to the everyday programme.
For instance Chemistry and Ancient Greek as well as Homer's epics are
some of the new lessons that students take.
STUDY TIME AT HOME - TESTS - EXAMS
Throught the years children have to dedicate more and more time to study for the next day at
school. The avarage time that they have to study is one to two hours, but it depends on the
student, his age and also the homework for the next school day. Each student has to learn
something act-out and solve some excercises that are given to him in order to understand what
they have learnt.
Moreover there are the final exams wich are at the end of the school year (something that doesn't
happen in primary school). The students have two weeks to study everything that has been tought
to them during the previous year and then write a test for each lesson.
DISCIPLINE AT SCHOOL, TEACHER-STUDENT
RELATIONSHIP
Throught the years , the relationship between teachers and students is getting less and less
strict. Nowdays students aren't in fear of their teachers and teachers are not so strict with their
students . Instead , teachers can make jokes with their students , or the other way . Also
teachers and students may share life experiences according to the topic that they are
discussing in the classroom .
Lastly, most students obey the (few) rules that the Headmaster sets
(which are not so strict) so there aren't any "problems" between the
teachers and the students .
TOOLS AND MATERIALS
Students at present day schools are obligated to use the books that are
given to them at the beginning of the year , from the goverment.
The books are usually two for each lesson.
These books contain the theory of the
lessons and many excersises to help
the students understand each one
better and practise .
Moreover students have to own some notebooks . These notebooks are
used for taking notes and writting the homework. Each student also has to
be equipped with the basic tools.
Some of these are pens and pencils, erasers and highlighters. Every lesson
needs different equipment so there are much more tools that students need
to buy at the beginning of each school year.
SCHOOL HOURS , LENGTH OF SCHOOL YEARS
Nowdays children start going to school from the age of 6 and finish school at the age of
18(usually) . They go to school every day (except from Saturdays , Sundays and National
celebrations) at 8:10 am and can return back home at 2:10 pm . The school year starts in early
September and finishes the next year in June.
There are 3 mid-year school breaks :
Christmas , lasts 2 weeks.
Easter , lasts 2 weeks.
Summer , It's the end of the school year and and lasts from Early June to Early September.
After Summer break , a new School year starts and (most likely) children
pass to the next class!
SCHOOL BUILDINGS , NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN A
CLASS , SCHOOL FACILITIES
Today's schools are not very different from the old schools.Τoday the
schools have more halls and even hall informatics. They are bigger than the
old schools and also have a big yard for the students . Also there are more
lessons.
A today class has approximately 17- 24 children .
Also classes have right equipment for an emergency
( fire extinguisher,first aid box ).
