A Big Fire 
Michael was cooking rice on the gas stove. Suddenly, the fire 
got very big. It burned the ceiling and spread to the walls and floor 
of the house. Michael tried his best to put out the fire but he 
couldn’t. 
“Fire! Fire! Please help me put out the fire!” shouted Michael. 
His next-door neighbor saw the fire. He ran home as fast as he 
could and saved his children and belongings. Other neighbors saw 
the fire, too. They, too, tried to save as much as they could of their 
properties and ran away from the fire. Nobody helped the poor 
boy put out the fire.

A Lesson for Rona 
Rona and Marie were close friends. They were both pretty 
and intelligent. Last year, both girls became the outstanding 
students in their class. 
Although they were bright, they differed in some ways. Marie 
was clean, neat and orderly in all her ways, but Rona was the 
opposite. She always started her work on time but she never 
finished anything. 
a week before the closing of school, the outstanding student 
in the class was announced. On that day, Rona went home with 
her eyes very red.

Things to Remember When Making an 
Inference 
1. A set of events can have several likely outcomes but only 
one real outcome; 
2. A predicted outcome states only what may happen, not 
what will actually happen; 
3. When you predict an outcome, you should consider all the 
facts that are available as well as your own experiences.

The Traffic Sign 
Edgar was sent by his mother on an errand to Divisoria one morning. He 
asked Rudy to go with him so that he would have a companion. The two boys 
enjoyed each other’s company. 
on their way to Divisoria, it was necessary for them to cross C.M. Recto 
Street. 
“Come, let’s cross here,” said Rudy to Edgar. 
There’s the pedestrian lane over there. We’ll cross at the pedestrian lane,” 
answered Edgar. 
“And waste our time?” asked Rudy. There’s no policeman around. We’ll 
obey traffic signs only when there’s policeman around.” 
Rudy pulled Edgar by the hand and pretty soon they were at the middle of 
C.M. Recto Street. 
“Prrrt! Hey you! Shouted a man in khaki uniform who was coming 
towards the two boys.

  • 3. A Big Fire Michael was cooking rice on the gas stove. Suddenly, the fire got very big. It burned the ceiling and spread to the walls and floor of the house. Michael tried his best to put out the fire but he couldn’t. “Fire! Fire! Please help me put out the fire!” shouted Michael. His next-door neighbor saw the fire. He ran home as fast as he could and saved his children and belongings. Other neighbors saw the fire, too. They, too, tried to save as much as they could of their properties and ran away from the fire. Nobody helped the poor boy put out the fire.
