This document provides a detailed pre-production plan for a music video. It includes locations, equipment, costumes, actors and schedules. Key equipment includes a Canon DSLR camera, tripod, and SD card. Main actors are identified. Locations in Ringwood are scouted through photos. Detailed floor plans and shot lists are provided. Production is scheduled over 4 days in December. Post-production in January includes editing shots in Adobe Premier Pro. Evaluation and a digipak are scheduled for February and March.
2. EQUIPMENT
CAMERA & LENS
Canon EOS 700D
EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
Specs
• 18MP APS-C 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor
• Phase detection AF from imaging sensor for Live View and Video
• Continuous autofocus in movie mode with subject tracking
• 14-bit DIGIC 5 processor
• ISO 100-12800 standard, 25600 expanded
• 5 fps continuous shooting

• 63 zone iFCL metering
• 1080p30 video recording with built-in stereo mics
• 1.04m dot 3:2 touch-sensitive vari-angle ClearView II LCD
Why am I using this?
I have chosen to use the Canon EOS 60D as it is the most accessible to me. It is a piece of equipment that I
own myself and so I will be able to use it whenever it is needed, which should shorten production time. Not
only this, but I am confident that it will be able to shoot at an extremely high quality and its ability to work well
in low lighting will be very beneficial to me.
3. EQUIPMENT
SD CARD
Transcend 16GB Premium SDHC Class 10 Memory Card
Key Features
Low power consumption
Fast write speed help extend battery runtime
Large capacity for storing high resolution movies and pictures
Built using MLC Flash chips for guaranteed performance
Built-in hardware ECC technology for detecting and correcting errors
High-speed transfers between card and computer
Why am I using this?
Like my chosen camera and lens, the SD card is also easily accessible
as it is one I own myself. It also has beneficial key features such as its
fast write speed that will help to extend battery runtime. This means
less time charging and more filming time.
4. EQUIPMENT
TRIPOD
Velbon DF-41 Tripod
Product Features
Suitable for DSLR cameras
Mount size: 1/4"
Max. height: 1.46 m
Maximum load: 2 kg
Material: Aluminium
Screw on head attachment
Thread mount size: ¼ in
Ability to pan and tilt
Closed length: 0.51m
Why am I using this?
A tripod is essential for my filming since it will allow me to gather steady shots and shots at different
heights. It will also give me the ability to steadily pan and tilt when filming certain scenes. I have
chosen to use this particular tripod (the Velbon DF-41 Tripod) since it is another piece of equipment
that is easily available to me.
PROPS Besides the equipment, there are few things I will need for my video shoot. Only
my ‘extra’ actors will take advantage of on screen props; the group of teens at the
roadside will be kicking about a football and so this is the only thing I will need.
5. ACTORS
For my music video I will require 2 main actors: one female, one male. The male will become the
‘artist’ who will lip sync and also perform in the visuals alongside the female character. I will also
require a selection of ‘extra’ actors, who will fill the roles of by passers and the teens that hover at
the roadside.
Main Male
Liam White, a Ringwood School student, will be starring as the main male performer.
He will be featured throughout the narrative and will also carry out the lip syncs. I was keen to for
Liam to star as I was after a young actor who would be able to portray emotion successfully,
particularly as Retrograde is such an expressive song. I feel as if Liam will be able to show this
required emotion so that the visuals can run parallel to the meaningful lyrics of Retrograde.
Main Female
Lily Curtis, a Ringwood School student, will be starring as the main female performer. Again, I feel
she will be able to put on an expressive performance which is particularly important for Retrograde.
I know she will take the role seriously and will perform to a high standard.
‘Extra’ Actors
The group of teens at the roadside will be played by 4 Ringwood School Students: James Battye,
Will Bedford, Rory Giddings and Josh Sullivan. I will take advantage of locals on the day, who if
give permission, will become by passers.
6. COSTUMES
MALE CHARACTER FEMALE CHARACTER
I have decided to stick with simple costumes for my two main characters. Anything
too bright or extravagant may distract viewers from the video’s concepts and
narrative, and may also draw attention away from the song lyrics. Bright costumes or
designs are simply not relative to the narrative and so would be unnecessary. I must
also ensure that my female character isn’t wearing anything too revealing which may
allow her to be sexualised. Again, this wouldn’t be relevant to the narrative. Having
simple costumes would also help to present my characters as normal and ‘everyday’
individuals, allowing my audience to relate to the video. The group of teens at the
roadside will, however, be styled in a certain way. I plan to dress them in tracksuits
and hoodies, clothing that is stereotypically worn by thugs and troublesome youths
and can allow them to appear threatening to the featured female character. This
helps emphasise her loneliness in the world and perhaps how she is made to fear
other people. For this reason, it is essential that I style the teens in a certain way.
7. LOCATIONS/RECCE
PHOTOS
The below will be filmed in Ringwood, particularly down its streets and underpasses.
Shots: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20
Shots 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 will be filmed within an underpass, shown here on the map.
Shots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 20 will also be filmed close by in Ringwood
but in more exposed areas. These areas can be seen on the following slide.
9. LOCATIONS/RECCE
PHOTOS (CONTINUED)
Shot: 14
Shot 14 will be filmed at Linford bottom in an area of forest.
Shots: 7, 13, 16
These shots feature lip sync. The artist will be posed against a plain backdrop with a
light illuminating his face. I therefore do not need a particular location for this shot to be
filmed at and so I have chosen to shoot these at my family home in Ashley Heath,
10. FLOOR PLAN
• For shots 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 (at the underpass).
• This floor plan shows the positioning of the camera in comparison to the
character for each shot.
• The direction of the camera is show by arrows on the floor plan.

• The precise filming location is shown on the map (an area of forest close to
the car park).
• I have developed a floor plan for this area of space.

For shot 14, the camera will be
facing North but will track the
characters as they cross the scene.
