Dentists examine patients' teeth and mouth tissue to diagnose and treat problems. Some specialize in areas like orthodontics or oral surgery. Dentists complete 4 years of dental school after 2 years of prerequisite education. They treat conditions like cavities, gum disease, and tooth alignment issues. Most dentists work part-time schedules of 35-40 hours per week and earn a median salary of $133,742. Employment opportunities are expected to grow due to retiring dentists and an increasing demand for dental care services.

A study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics determined that children between ages 6 and 10 with prominently protruding upper front teeth (commonly referred to as “buck teeth”) suffer a high risk of dental trauma unless corrected early with orthodontics. The study’s findings showed that 1 in 3 children treated early for buck teeth was less likely to damage their teeth.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic TreatmentBlaine Cusack
Dr. Blaine Cusack graduated with honors from Loyola University in 1984. A diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management, he is also a board-certified biological dentist. At LaGrange Jaw Pain Management, Blaine Cusack, DDS, practices general dentistry and orthodontics.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, every child should see an orthodontist by age seven for an analysis of their current oral condition. Here are three benefits of early orthodontic treatment.
Encourages a healthy dental arch
Early intervention can help palatal growth, without which the child’s teeth may be crooked. Getting early treatment prevents the child from developing narrowed jaws, eliminating the likelihood of crowding and the potential need for later dental surgery.
Protects teeth and gum health
Timely orthodontic treatment lowers the risk of a child damaging any protruding teeth. The use of braces will align and pull in the protruding teeth. In addition, once the child’s teeth are straightened, gum health will improve considerably.
Helps chewing and digestion
For good digestion and proper nutrition, it's necessary to break down the food into the smallest pieces possible. If teeth are not properly aligned, that may be a challenge and could hinder child development. The orthodontist may recommend braces to optimize teeth alignment to enable the easy chewing of food.

In India very few people opt for dentistry, but if you really see, there are lot of opportunities in this field and there is huge demand for dentists. According to a survey by the World Health Organization, there is only one dentist for 10,000 people in India. The situation in the village is even more worst as one dentist is serving 2,50,000 people. This clearly shows that the supply of dentists to the demand is not sufficient.

Choosing a Pedodontics Dentist
Selecting the right pediatric dentist for your child is a crucial decision. Here are some factors to consider when making this choice:
1. Pediatric Specialty
Ensure that the dentist is a pediatric specialist, meaning they have undergone additional training specifically focused on the unique needs of children.
2. Child-Friendly Environment
A welcoming and child-friendly dental office can make a significant difference in how your child perceives dental visits. Look for an office with a warm atmosphere, colorful décor, and staff experienced in working with children.
12 Dental Specialties Which Specialist is BEST for you.pdfAnshuman Jamdade
The modern refined (soft and sticky) sugary diet has not only worsened our oral but systemic health too. The mouth has the second largest and most diverse microbiota after the gut and it became a constant source of inflammation. Tooth decay and gum diseases are one of the most common diseases affecting mankind. Teeth, gums, jaws, salivary glands, and oral-facial structures are interconnected complex members of the same family. Dentistry is not just limited to teeth. As everyone is a dental patient, dentists routinely encounter medical conditions. Many systemic diseases usually manifest in the oral cavity. Furthermore, dental tissues once damaged cannot be regenerated or repaired by themselves. Dentists have to be both doctors as well as engineers. You need special skills and knowledge about dentistry, medicine as well as engineering to manage dento-maxillofacial structure. Oral health is necessary to maintain your overall health and well-being. That’s why, dentistry demands extensive, time-consuming, rigorous training to master its art and science. Dental specialties are developed to improve the art and science of dentistry and the quality of patient care. Many patients are not familiar with dental specialties/specialists. As of this writing, there are twelve dental specialties / dental specialists. It is important for you to know about dental specialties, what they do, and which specialist is BEST for you.
Study Programs in Dentistry
Dentistry, in the field of study, offers both graduate (bachelor’s) and post-graduate (master’s) degree programs. A bachelor’s degree known as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), is a four-year study program that provides basic knowledge and practical skills in the field of oral health so that you can apply the same to diagnose and treat the patients of this field in an optimal way, as well as to educate people about preventive measures. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to practice general dentistry.
Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) is a post-graduate degree program in dentistry that take three years to complete. Individuals must have completed BDS to be eligible for the MDS program. MDS is a dental specialization course that focuses on the advanced study of a particular area of dentistry, much like a cardiologist or neurologist. MDS course takes three years to complete and includes coursework, clinical training, and research. Upon completion, post-graduates are eligible to practice as a specialist in their field as well as general dentistry.
In some countries that recognize dental specialties, the specialist is only allowed to practice the specialty and cannot carry out the practice of general dentistry. A general dentist may refer patients (complex cases), and a specialist’s practice is mainly on a referral basis. In some countries, a specialist can conduct general as well as specialty practice.

2. Dentist Dentists examine patients' teeth and mouth tissue in order to diagnose and treat problems.
3. Most are general practitioners, but some specialize by becoming: orthodontists oral and maxillofacial surgeons pediatric dentists periodontists prosthodontists endodontists public health dentists oral pathologists oral and maxillofacial radiologists
4. Orthodontists straighten teeth using devices that apply pressure, i.e., braces and retainers. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons operate on the mouth and jaws. Pediatric dentists treat children. Periodontists treat gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Prosthodontists replace missing teeth with dentures, bridges and crowns. Endodontists perform root canal therapy. Public health dentists work within communities to promote good dental health. Oral pathologists study oral diseases. Oral and maxillofacial radiologists use imaging technologies to diagnose diseases in the head and neck.
5. Educational Requirements must attend a dental school that is accredited by the American Dental Association(ADA). To be accepted into one of these schools, one must complete at least 2 years of pre-dental education All dental schools require applicants to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). After graduating from dental school, one must be licensed by the state in which that person wants to practice.
6. Dental school usually lasts 4 academic years. Studies begin with classroom instruction and laboratory work in science, including anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. Beginning courses in clinical sciences, including laboratory techniques, are also completed. During the last 2 years, students treat patients, usually in dental clinics, under the supervision of licensed dentists. Most dental schools award the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Others award an equivalent degree, Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).
7. High school and college students who want to become dentists should take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, health, and mathematics. College undergraduates planning on applying to dental school are required to take many science courses. Because of this, some choose a major in a science, such as biology or chemistry, whereas others take the required science coursework while pursuing a major in another subject.
8. A day in a Dentist’s Life On a typical day a dentist may remove decay from teeth and fill cavities examine x-rays extract teeth apply sealants to teeth administer anesthetics prescribe medication treat gum disease by performing surgery on gums and supporting bones straighten teeth take impressions of teeth in order to make models that will be used to make dentures to replace missing teeth
9. A dentist removes tooth decay, fill cavities, and repair fractured teeth.
10.
11. Work Environment Most dentists are solo practitioners, meaning that they own their own businesses and work alone or with a small staff. Some dentists have partners, and a few work for other dentists as associate dentists.
12. Work Schedule Most dentists work 4 or 5 days a week. Some work evenings and weekends to meet their patients' needs. The number of hours worked varies greatly among dentists. Most full-time dentists work between 35 and 40 hours a week. However, others, especially those who are trying to establish a new practice, work more. Also, experienced dentists often work fewer hours. It is common for dentists to continue in part-time practice well beyond the usual retirement age.
13. Salary $$$$$$ The median expected salary for a typical Dentist in the United States is $133,742.
14. Employment Outlook The employment outlook for dentists is growing through 2012 due to the high number of retiring dentists. This will allow good opportunities for new dentists to begin their own practices or to buy existing practices. The need for dental care continues to increase each year. Because dental care has improved, older Americans are keeping their teeth versus getting dentures. These people will continue to need dental care. Also, with the baby-boomers entering middle age, they will need increasing amounts of dental work to maintain their teeth. Preventative care is still needed by the younger generations. The demand for dental services is projected to be higher than the employment of dentists due to the help of dental assistants and hygienists for basic dental care.
15. Dental care will focus more on prevention, including teaching people how to take better care of their teeth. Dentists will increasingly provide care that is aimed at preventing the loss of teeth—rather than simply providing treatments, such as fillings. Improvements in dental technology also will allow dentists to offer more effective and less painful treatment to their patients. Today’s dentists are emphasizing preventative care. Their goal is to help people retain their teeth by helping them learn how to care for their gums and teeth. As technology continues to advance, dentists are providing better and less painful treatments.
