Cabot Creamery is a dairy cooperative that handles over 2 billion pounds of milk per year across 4 manufacturing plants. It produces aged cheddar cheese, with over 60 million pounds in inventory. Cabot has its own fleet of trucks for direct store delivery, long-haul, and shuttle transportation between facilities, and also uses third-party carriers. Hurricane Irene in 2011 caused delivery route changes and added miles and hours for direct store delivery drivers and sales staff, costing the company an additional $23,750.

Typical 3rd party transportation is considered “truck load with stop-offs”.
Truck may start delivering in KY., drop in TN., drop in OK., drop in TX., and
finish in AZ.
As many as 10 “deliveries” on any given load and may end anywhere
within the U.S.

DSD (Direct Store Delivery) travel effects
* 17 weekly deliveries were removed from trucks and
transferred to salesmerchandiser vehicles where “no truck”
travel was permitted.
* 220 miles per week were added to “routes” to
accommodate stores that were less impacted.
* Drivers took, on average, 3 additional hours per week to
accomplish their daily routes.
* Salesmerchandiser staff took, on average, 6 additional
hours per week to accomplish their daily tasks.
* Primary obstruction was the closure of Rt. 107 for 5 months.
