Water supply and sanitation
Backdrop of this activity
• PRADAN has been implementing piped water
supply to agriculture fields; mostly in uplands for
agriculture (specifically second crop with
irrigation) in different villages from 2001 onwards
, with the help of Japanese Embassy and
SDTT(2009).
• After successful implementation it was user
friendly and also managed by the community
, district official shown interest to replicate it
(OTELP in 2008 and ITDA in 2012 )
• More importantly we have advocated for the
release of programme fund to village directly in a
belief that they can manage their fund.
How it is different from the previous one?
Earlier model
• It was only to the fields
• Used only in agriculture
• In some conditions very distant
from their houses.
• Need to organize the community for
utilizing the water. Ex- one can’t do
agriculture alone in a isolated
patch. Have to flow water from
some one others field with
permission.
• Issue of fencing and crop damage
by other means like theft.
• Travelling from home to that place
twice a day and being at the fields
apart from home are painful
• Opening are through flanges and
loss of water are there in filed
channels.
New model
• Not only to fields but also to homestead
• Apart from agriculture other household
consumptions like
washing, bathing, cleaning the dishes
etc and less drudgery for women
member of a family , and can have
proper sanitation.
• Nearer to their living place
• No need to depend on any one as it is
self owned and could use when ever
she wants. No permission from any one.
• As it is her homestead it was fenced or
supposed to be fenced and watched by
the family itself being in her own home
and can take two crops.
• Taps are there to operate and even
more user friendly for women too and
even flexible pipes to irrigate her
homestead like gardening and being
Before After
Some thoughts….
• Our focus was always on enhancement of income
rather than minimizing expenditures of a family.
• In most of the time we do worry, how the tomato
plant will survive or the kid goat but never discuss
about the life of a human we interact everyday.
• Every year how each family can have two crops and
an income of 50,000 in this less availability of water
,is family is sufficient in nutrition?
• See if the bucket seep out in some place 1st we need
to make it leak proof, then the bucket may carry
what is inside it, otherwise …
• Engagement not only for income or empowerment
but for quality of life may sense more.

The “idea” behind HHWS & S.
• WOMEN FOCUSED – time for own, less drudgery,
addressing issues of old-age.
• LIVELIHOOD PROSPECTUS – income enhancement
through agriculture in homestead through drip in
25 dec.of land.
• HEALTH & HYGIENE – nutritional crop and food
consumption, use of toilet and bathroom, safe
drinking water,
• QUALITY OF LIFE AND WELL BEING – Dignity, basic
need fulfillment through water at doorstep
• SCOPE FOR TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION – Drip
irrigation, weir mesh fencing, tap running water
Concerns need to be focused
• AWARENESS CREATION :
On HH water supply and sanitation, health and hygiene, judicious use of water,
use of toilet and bathroom.
• TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING :
Quality of implementation, maintenance.
• IMPLEMENTIATION & TECHNOLOGY :
Using of HDPE pipe , Safe drinking water, agronomy and crop basket, Drip
irrigation and crop selection
• INSTITUTIONAL ASPECT :
Cost sharing, repair & maintenance ,raising community funds
• POLICY :
Weir mesh, drip, toilet and bathroom –funds through local funding like block and
ITDA
• NEW OPPORTUNITIES :
Cooperative and marketing of agricultural goods, Packaged drinking water as an
enterprise.
