Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome to our other project partner institutions colleagues and colleagues from other Faculties and departments. Although this is an event focussed on ADM, we hope that much of the material may be thought provoking for you, and that you will contribute to a greater understanding of OER issues for us. What we want to get across in this event, and what we hope to achieve Increase knowledge and interest in subject of OERs Encourage staff to think about using some OERs in future Encourage staf to think about making some OERS in future. -realistically.

Really good response from staff: The aims of our project have been developed from the HEA-ADM Focus Group discussions in January, which identified a positive response to greater use of openly available digital resources, tempered with concerns about appropriateness for studio based courses, discipline specificity, and issues of IP. In addition, our focus group were keen to demonstrate the expertise and talents of our staff and students in the production of resources.   Of particular concern was the challenge of using existing OERs, as much that is already available seems to be instructive, or designed to ‘deliver content’ whereas we might argue that the pedagogical structure of our Art & Design courses promote students as producers rather than consumers of content. There was a strong feeling that any OERs should enhance Studio Pedagogy by focussing on the development of creative attributes. Our curriculum is based on engagement with shifting cultural paradigms and interpretations, and any resources will need to be flexible enough to sustain engagement over a period of time to warrant investment in their creation. All of this will require an effort in terms of staff development, and a consideration of workload to allow ongoing development of resources as an embedded role.

  8. Currently our IP policy doesn’t allow us to us CC licences. How can we think about a- some quick wins, formulate a process which can assist staff to easily turn teaching content into OER B, indentify significant enhancements of student experience and employability that we are prepared to fund in an organised manner

  10. If we want to make OERS, some questions might be – where do we put this stuff? How will people find them, how will we use OERs to benefit our Faculty reputation and our students. Multiple platforms, but – we need a proper discussion in our Faculty leading to an overall policy for greatest benefit. I might argue that one model could be our new transferable model for the design school….
  11. We need to consider who the audience for any proposed OERs might be, and take into account international interpretations of our resources; how these might reflect on the general aims of our Faculty.
