General Introduction
 The river Ganga is the longest river in India, and one of the most
sacred rivers for the Indians.
 It is considered a central part of Indian tradition, life and culture.
 It is also the third largest river across the globe by discharge.
 The river Ganga is a 2,525 km trans-boundary river of Asia that
rises in the western Himalayas and flows through India and
Bangladesh.
 In Bihar the river Ganga travels a length of 445 KM from Chausa
(Buxar) to Manihari (Katihar).

General Introduction
 At the entry point the average discharge of the river is 400
cumecs where as it increases up to 1600 cumecs when it leaves
Bihar.
 This shows that in Bihar large number of tributaries having high
discharge enriches the flow of river Ganga.
 The main tributaries of the river Ganga in Bihar are Sone,
Ghaghara, Gandak, Punpun, Burhi Gandak, Koshi and
Mahanada.

 There are 23 towns situated on main stem of River Ganga in Bihar
state which have been considered for sewerage projects under
Namami Gange Programme .
 Out of 23 towns (Main Stem of River Ganga) 16 towns sewerage
projects such as Buxer, Patna, Barh, Mokama, Sultanganj,
Naugachhiya, Bhagalpur, Munger, Begusarai, Hajipur, Sonepur,
Chhapra, Khagaria, Fatuha, Bakhtiyarpur and Maner have been
approved by NMCG.
 Total approved Cost for sewerage infrastructure is Rs-
5040.63Cr.(GOI)/5397.77Cr. (GOB).

 From the above details it is clear that Sewerage projects (Network and STP) for
Buxer, Patna, Hajipur, Begusarai and Munger and other towns I&D with STP
projects have been proposed.
 In towns where STP with Network have been proposed, after completion of project
no sewage/ Solid Waste will flow through drains/Nala.
 In other towns after completion of I&D STP Projects, nalas will be taped and no
sewage / solid waste will be allowed to enter in the river Ganga without treatment.
 In STP there is provision of mechanically/manually operated screens at the entry
point of STP from which solid wastes will be screened .
 In this regard premier institute like IIT Patna, NIT Patna, BIT Meshra (Patna) & MIT
Muzaffarpur have been requested to deliver technological assistance.
