DIVERSIONBASEDIRRIGATION
Back Ground:-
DBI:A diversion based irrigation system is one which diverts a
portion of water from a natural stream/water course/river and
uses it with or without intermediate storage along the gravity for
the purpose of irrigating crops , domestic uses and drinking
water.
• SDTT has been supporting NGOs to implement the programme
on DBI since 2009 to promote the development of small scale
irrigation through diversion of water from stream. The 1st Phase
completed in 2012 and 2nd phase will be continuing up to March
2015.
•The DBI Secretariat set up in Bhubaneswar and housed in
Livolink Foundation, and functioning as an extended arm of the
Trust in programme. Major activities-Technical Support to
NGOs, Coordination, Publications on technical
aspects, Monitoring and Capacity Building of NGOs.

Irrigationstructure-AharPyne
Ahar-Pyne
Ahar pye system is an indigenous irrigation technology of
South Bihar. An Ahar is a rectangular embankment type water
harvesting structure, i.e. a catchment basin embankment on
three sides & fourth side being the natural gradient of land
itself and pyne are the irrigation channels.
Irrigationstructure-Dong
Dong:These are traditional irrigation system of plains of Assam. It is
one type of channel based DBI, Where de silting, renovation, widening
and dredging of the existing canal system is done. The earthen canal and
the distributaries are revived to increase its capacity( conveyance
system).Partner NGOs-Grameen Sahara/Gyama Vikash Manch
implemented Dong under DBI Programme.
Irrigationstructure-Gonchi
GONCHI:Gonchi is a diversion based irrigation system developed by the
local people and it is an indigenous method of Irrigation to share surface
water diverted from natural streams and rivers with the help of gravity.
At the head of these channels, farmers prepared large pits (locally called
talipiri) on stream / river bed from which the oozed water will be diverted to
the channel by gravity flow. It is practiced in parts of Andhra Pradesh for
over three centuries.
NGOs-CWS/RIID implemented Gonchi under DBI Programme in
Anatapuram district of Andra Pradesh.
TANKA/ KUND/ KUNDI: In the desert and arid areas of
Rajasthan & Gujarat, people build unique underground
structures of various shapes and sizes to collect rain water for
drinking purposes. These structures called Tankas, Kund or
Kundis. These are constructed in a different places like court
yards, in front of houses and temples, in open agricultural
fields, barren land etc. Partner NGOs-BAIF,GMK & FES
implemented Dong under DBI Programme
Irrigationstructure-Tanka
•Irrigationstructure-Gonchi Pipe based Gravity Fed Irrigation System(PGFBI)
A pipe based gravity fed irrigation diversion based irrigation system is one
which diverts a portion of water from a natural stream/water course/river
though pipe conveyance system along the gravity to the point of use at down
stream.
•It reduces the water losses by evaporation, conveyance and seepage. Runoff
can not enter in to it. It will not affect agricultural operation though buried
underground.
•It does not require any energy like gasoline/electricity. It is environment
friendly (zero emission).
•It is easy to implement (Short duration) and maintain by the community.
•The average cost of the
project is 5-10 lakh, irrigating
an 25-40 acres,
.

  • 1. JTT-DBI Programme Coverage and Achievements Kamakshi Prasad Padhy Livolink Foundation DIVERSIONBASEDIRRIGATION
  • 2. Back Ground:- DBI:A diversion based irrigation system is one which diverts a portion of water from a natural stream/water course/river and uses it with or without intermediate storage along the gravity for the purpose of irrigating crops , domestic uses and drinking water. • SDTT has been supporting NGOs to implement the programme on DBI since 2009 to promote the development of small scale irrigation through diversion of water from stream. The 1st Phase completed in 2012 and 2nd phase will be continuing up to March 2015. •The DBI Secretariat set up in Bhubaneswar and housed in Livolink Foundation, and functioning as an extended arm of the Trust in programme. Major activities-Technical Support to NGOs, Coordination, Publications on technical aspects, Monitoring and Capacity Building of NGOs. BACKGROUND

  • 4. Irrigationstructure-AharPyne Ahar-Pyne Ahar pye system is an indigenous irrigation technology of South Bihar. An Ahar is a rectangular embankment type water harvesting structure, i.e. a catchment basin embankment on three sides & fourth side being the natural gradient of land itself and pyne are the irrigation channels.
  • 5. Irrigationstructure-Dong Dong:These are traditional irrigation system of plains of Assam. It is one type of channel based DBI, Where de silting, renovation, widening and dredging of the existing canal system is done. The earthen canal and the distributaries are revived to increase its capacity( conveyance system).Partner NGOs-Grameen Sahara/Gyama Vikash Manch implemented Dong under DBI Programme.
  • 6. Irrigationstructure-Gonchi GONCHI:Gonchi is a diversion based irrigation system developed by the local people and it is an indigenous method of Irrigation to share surface water diverted from natural streams and rivers with the help of gravity. At the head of these channels, farmers prepared large pits (locally called talipiri) on stream / river bed from which the oozed water will be diverted to the channel by gravity flow. It is practiced in parts of Andhra Pradesh for over three centuries. NGOs-CWS/RIID implemented Gonchi under DBI Programme in Anatapuram district of Andra Pradesh.
  • 7. TANKA/ KUND/ KUNDI: In the desert and arid areas of Rajasthan & Gujarat, people build unique underground structures of various shapes and sizes to collect rain water for drinking purposes. These structures called Tankas, Kund or Kundis. These are constructed in a different places like court yards, in front of houses and temples, in open agricultural fields, barren land etc. Partner NGOs-BAIF,GMK & FES implemented Dong under DBI Programme Irrigationstructure-Tanka
  • 8. •Irrigationstructure-Gonchi Pipe based Gravity Fed Irrigation System(PGFBI) A pipe based gravity fed irrigation diversion based irrigation system is one which diverts a portion of water from a natural stream/water course/river though pipe conveyance system along the gravity to the point of use at down stream. •It reduces the water losses by evaporation, conveyance and seepage. Runoff can not enter in to it. It will not affect agricultural operation though buried underground. •It does not require any energy like gasoline/electricity. It is environment friendly (zero emission). •It is easy to implement (Short duration) and maintain by the community. •The average cost of the project is 5-10 lakh, irrigating an 25-40 acres, .
