2. What is Report Writing?
– The definition of report writing is creating an account or statement that
describes in detail an event, situation or occurrence, usually as the result of
observation or inquiry. The two most common forms of report writing are
news report writing and academic report writing.
– Essentially, a report is a short, sharp, concise document which is written for a
particular purpose and audience. It generally sets outs and analyses a
situation.
3. Kinds of Reports
– There are two possible types of reports on the exam:
– One is a report to a magazine or newspaper and the other is a report to the
Principal or the police.
– Of course a report to the Principal or police will need to be formal. Remember
your audience. These are busy people and will not appreciate a large amount of
digression. Write to the point.
– A magazine/newspaper report will be less formal and can include a headline
and also some direct quotations/reported speech from people who were
present at the scene/ have an opinion.
4. Points to Remember
– A report will be mostly in the past tense. Remember that, you are reporting
after all.
– You must use paragraphs. Each paragraph should contain one key point and
the topic sentence should indicate this clearly with the rest of the paragraph
developing the point.
– At the end of the report, there should be a summing up of the main points
and an inference or suggestion/recommendation about the way forward.
5. Structure of A Report

must use this structure:

9. To The Principal
Report on Poetry Symposium held at DCS, BWP
Dear Madam,
A symposium was organised on 1st March 2019 in the school on the topic “Poetry is the essence of life”.
All the English Language students were a part of the classical programme.
The event stared with the felicitation of the guest speakers. Thereafter, the participants were espoused
by Sr. Anna Bakhshi. She acquainted them with the objectives and goals of the workshop. The resource
person Mr. Chris reflected his profound knowledge on the topic and highlighted how important it is to
make the students read and write poetry.
An interactive concourse ignited the inquisitiveness of the participants. They have committed
themselves completely to bring about a change in their life. The informative workshop culminated with
a vote of thanks proposed by the head of the English department.
I anticipate; this report will convey the whole scenario of the event.
