War I And Sick Of War
According to William Tecumseh Sherman, he is tired and sick of war. It is only those who have neither
fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance,
for desolation. War is hell. This statement is self explanatory; the nature of war is reckless. Yes, when
experiencing war, some soldiers may come across gratifying sounds of larks, song birds, which
remind them of ebullient moments. Nevertheless, is brutally fighting really worth that? Roughly ten
million soldiers lost their lives in World War I, along with seven million civilians; also, many soldiers
experienced shell shock, which is a psychological disturbance caused by war. As a result of the
heinous and atrocious experiences that many were put through, this inspired many poets to record
their remembrances. Although war may bring memories of happiness because of the pleasing sounds,
war should be considered a crime regardless of how necessary or justified it seems because war leads
to mental anguish due to the memories of physical pain, soldiers being frightened because of
unexpected occurrences and ferocious deaths.
In the poem Mental Cases by Wilfred Owen, Owen describes in stark detail the ghastly physical
symptoms and memories that led to long lasting mental torment. A few months before Owen was
killed in action in 1918, he wrote this poem that appears to draw heavily on his own experience of
being a mental case at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh where

A Wrinkle in Time Essay
By: Madeleine L Engle
Book Report By:
Madeleine L Engle a French author uses a creative mixture of science and fairy tale magic for building
the story line in her book A Wrinkle in Time. From beginning to end Meg, Charles Wallace, and
Calvin go through adventure after adventure bursting with animated fairy tale characteristics. This
book has a model preteen coming of age theme. The three are intertwined naturally, and work well
within the science fiction twist of this very unbelievable fantasy tale. The main character Meg Murry
is the perfect innocent child turned into a hero. The beginning of the story presents a 13 year old Meg
as young, and constantly wallowing in self pity. Meg enters the first chapter emotionally immature

The children soon realize that there are no nice people in Camazotz . In fact, Camazotz, which is
under the influence of the Black Thing which has defeated the planet, seriously threatens their lives.
As in many fairy tales, special gifts are presented to the children. Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which, and Mrs.
Who, accompany them on the hill overlooking Camazotz, assuring in a fairy godmother manner that
they will be near, and they will be watching then one by one they Give a precious talisman for each
child. Calvin is given his ability to communicate and a piece of Shakespeare s The Tempest, Charles
Wallace is given the resilience of his childhood and a caution to remember that you do not know
everything. Meg, much to her dismay, is given her faults, and much to her surprise, Mrs. Who s wacky
glasses. With only these gifts, and each other to lean on, the children now begin to test their limits as
they are forced to rely on their own thoughts and decisions in search for Mr. Murry.
Throughout the book Madeleine L Engle uses personified objects to bring the story to life. On the
planet Uriel creatures like the one Mrs. Whatsit had become were making music, music that came
not only from their throats but from the movements of their great wings as well. Mixing fantasy with
subtle Christianity the resonant voices rose and the words seem to be all around them Meg could
almost reach out and touch them ‘Sing unto the Lord a

Comparing Mary Shelley s Frankenstein and the Prometheus...
Comparing Mary Shelley s Frankenstein and the Prometheus Myth
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is subtitled The Modern Prometheus , and rightfully so. Prometheus, the
Titan of Greek mythology that created man and gave them fire, is a fitting symbol for Victor
Frankenstein, the man who created a monster and gave him life. The most obvious aspect of the
similarity between Frankenstein and the Prometheus myth is the underlying theme both stories deal
with ill fated actions with tragic consequences. The classic Prometheus stories, as told by Aeschylus,
Percy Bysshe Shelley and summarized by Edith Hamilton, contain symbolic and thematic elements
that closely parallel Mary Shelley s modern Prometheus.
Prometheus creation of man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another similarity between the two figures is their intention or goal. Both characters had supposedly
good intentions that were tainted through the fulfilment of their cause. Frankenstein believed that, a
new species will bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their
being to me (32). Prometheus insists that his actions had a similar impact I risked the bord attempt,
and saved mankind / From stark destruction and the road to hell... And in a single word to sum the
whole / All manner of arts men from Prometheus learned. (Aeschylus). In both cases, these ideas,
deluded or realistic, were not the actual or only outcome of their gifts . In Percy Bysshe Shelley s
interpretation of the Prometheus myth, Prometheus is faced with the consequences of his gift of fire
(and of creating the human race).

Essay on The Social Causes of Suicide and Durkheim s Theory
Durkheim was a functionalist, and theorised that a holistic social narrative could be identified which
would explain individual behaviour. He argued that, whilst society was made up of its members, it was
greater than the sum of its parts, and was an external pressure that determined the behaviour of the
individuals within it. At that time, suicide rates in Europe were rising, and so the causes of suicide
were on the agenda. Since suicide is seen as an intrinsically personal and individual action,
establishing it as having societal causes would be a strong defence for Durkheim s functionalist
perspective. Durkheim used the comparative method to study the official suicide rates of various
European countries. While he was not the first to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Durkheim does not see egoism, altruism, anomie and fatalism as types of suicide, but types of social
structure that highlight the presence or lack of integration and regulation. It must be stressed that this
excess/lack of integration and regulation are not seen as direct causes of suicide, rather Durkheim sees
a number of voluntary deaths in society as inevitable; integration and regulation are merely
prophylactic to suicidal impulses, which when taken to excess or dramatically reduced, fail to act as a
preventative, and so suicides occur. This clarification is an important strength of Durkheim s theory: it
allows the biography of the individuals who kill themselves to vary, while still explaining underlying
pressures/lack of to explain their deaths, and the varying suicide rates between groups. There are
various criticisms of Durkheim s methods and conclusions. His first great weakness must be seen as
his treatment of fatalism. Durkheim himself says it has little contemporary importance (1951: 276),
and Bearmann (1991) and Lehmann (1995) note how little coverage is given to it. Lehmann is
particularly condemning, saying, since fatalism is restricted to primitives and women, Durkheim finds
it uninteresting and relegates it to a footnote (1995: 918). One of the main examples Durkheim

Introduction:
The Associated Press (AP) is an American news agency that was established in 1846 by five daily
newspapers from New York City. They established the cooperation in order to deliver news about the
Mexican War faster than the U.S. Post Office could. The known founder was Moses Yale Beach and
the first CEO, named Alexander Jones, came to power in 1848. Today the company is run by Tom
Curley who has been the active CEO since 2003. Curley is stationed in the AP headquarters located in

From the establishments of the company and forward it has been these people who have been
traveling all over the world, risking their lives in order to gather the breaking news that AP is so
famous for. These men and woman are the reason that AP has been able to be the first to deliver the
breaking news from many of the most important historical events happening to mankind. From the
bombing of Pearl Harbor and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln to the death of Pope John Paul II
and the fall of the shah of Iran the Associated Press s reporters has been there to break the news before
anyone else. The Associated Press has won 49 Pulitzer Prizes in both writing and photography which
gives another great example of what an amazing strength their reporters are to the company. The
trustworthiness among these reporters and photographers are once again proven.
When discussing human capital there is another branch that is contributing to the strengths of the
company and that are the people that deal with the corporate part of the company. Even if the reporters
and photographers are doing an amazing job creating a brand image for the company it could not be
one without the people running it. One example is the people in the Research and Development
department who are always ahead of their time creating new and innovative ideas for the company.
One example of this is the Stylebook a guidebook for journalists, reporters, and photographers all over
the world.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Survey
Disadvantages of using Surveys The significance of the data can become neglected if the researcher
focuses too much on the range of coverage to the exclusion of an adequate account of the implications
of those data for relevant issues, problems, or theories. The data that are produced are likely to lack
details or depth on the topic being investigated. Securing a high response rate to a survey can be hard
to control, particularly when it is carried out by post, but is also difficult when the survey is carried out
face to face or over the telephone. 4.1.4 Administrations of Surveys The final survey instrument was
distributed to each of the employees by email and printed paper form. The main aim of applying these

administered collectively to the selected population under study becomes expensive method of data

Gifted Program Research Paper
Debriefing the interview responses from our county AIG coordinators proved to be enlightening.
There were many points of commonality between their evaluation of our gifted program, and my own
personal evaluation, but there are also points of contradiction. One particular point I agree with is that
a major strength of our gifted program is that our district is diligently working to improve the
program, within our capabilities. We are of course, limited by financial resources and time, of which
our coordinators have little control. In an attempt to be more responsive to the needs of our district,
and more inclusive, in 2016, our district adopted a new identification process for the gifted program
that included three different pathways to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only way to have an alternate aptitude test administered in DCS is to seek private testing with an
educational psychologist, to the tune of approximately $1,000. This puts a large majority of the
underrepresented at a distinct disadvantage as well. Not to mention, the irony! We are testing so we
know how best to differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of our students, yet we don t
differentiate the testing? Another weakness stated by our coordinators is lack of teacher training, and it
is also mentioned that we are focusing our professional development as a district, on differentiation.
Yet here we are, giving everyone the same test, even if we know it s not in their best interest. All
students who qualify and are identified are provided services on an Individual Differentiated
Education Plan (DEP). These DEPs are also intended to provide social and emotional support goals
for gifted students, but I don t believe I ve ever seen a single DEP with one of these goals. Overall, our
district continues to make great strides, and genuinely needs to make many more to address the
weaknesses of our AIG program. We have a good amount of resources at our disposal in the county
for our gifted population. The most important resource for any gifted program is personnel, and it is
our biggest resource weakness. Our AIG Specialists are split between schools and pulled in so many
different directions. I feel they could be much

The s Portrayal Of The Vampire
Vampirisms Portrayal
Many years ago in Wallachia, Romania, there was a price by the name of Vlad III Tepes. This man
was seen by many people of Romania as well as other parts of Europe, as a hero for his protection of
the north and south Romanians in which he was later recognized and honored in his leadership. At
first, he had many followers, but then they started to fade due to his practices of impaling his enemies,
he was labeled The Impeller. His reputation started to grow in a negative way because of the excessive
cruelty. This excessiveness of cruelty against his enemies cause a lot of blood shedding in which this
started the beginning of the vampire myth.
Throughout time, we can see that the myth of vampires has not only stayed in Romania. We see it in
literature dating back to the very beginning or discovery of this creature through the cruelty of Prince
Vlad III. However, the portrayal of the vampire did not stay the same as time went by. The portrayal
of vampirism has come long ways and changed as society did. The specific roles and details of the
vampires are crafted in relation to what society wants. However, the symbolic meaning behind the
vampire stays the same even if their role has changed; they represent what we both fear and desire as
humans: beauty, strength, and immortality. I will be analyzing the different representations and
treatments of vampirism in three different books, Dracula by Bram Stoker, Madness of Angels by Kate
Griffin, and Fledgling

Stereotypes In Don Delillo s White Noise
In White Noise, Don Delillo splits the story into three parts, beginning with Waves and Radiation .
The protagonist of the narrative, Jack Gladney, expresses early on how he invented Hitler studies in
North America (Delillo 4), preceded by his in depth description of the student s return to the College
on the Hill. Gladney shortly introduces his wife and his children, but soon introduces another
character, Murray Jay Siskind. Television and conceptions are a common theme throughout the book,
including when Murray and Jack visit the Most Photographed Barn in America. Murray notes that we

These conversations show an extent of how mundane life can be and how mesmerizing the TV savior
can be. Jack runs into Murray in the grocery store again, where Murray invites Jack and his family for
dinner. At the dinner that Murray hosts, he goes off a tangent about the power of television. He does
not describe the television as evil, but rather states that you have to know how to look. You have to
open yourself up to the data (Delillo 51), which shows that even if its images can be misleading,
television can be a magnificent thing if it is treated correctly. Denise accuses Babette of being on some
type of medication that involves memory loss as a side effect, and Jack goes on to confront her about
what she is taking. Babette denies that she has any recollection of taking drugs, but does not rule out
the possibility (Delillo 53), however, later on Denise discovers a Dylar pill bottle hidden in the trash
with Babette s name on the prescription (Delillo 62). As Jack converses with Alfonse Stompanato after
Murray s lecture, Alfonse brings up the idea of perception surrounding television when he says for

The Characters Of Harry Potter
The Harry Potter book series has sold over 450 million copies and is currently translated into almost
every language on the face of the earth ( Harry Potter ). Millions have faithfully followed the story
about this magical world and have fallen in love with the many enchanting characters. What most
readers do not recognize is the prominence that classical Greek/Roman mythological allusions play in
the beloved roles in Harry Potter through their names and personality attributes. The importance of
names is extremely significant to a person s identity, especially in literature where words are meant to
bring stories to life. Rowling continues this concept through her characters by linking her characters
names to classical folklore charismas that share similar personas. Rowling does a fantastic job with
cleverly connecting her characters to classical Greek/Roman mythological figures through the
etymology of their names and similar personality traits to their wizard counterparts, such as Professor
McGonagall and Filch. An apparent allusion to a classical mythological figure is the Hogwarts
transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall. Professor McGonagall is an extremely intelligent
woman, which is seen because she is tenured teacher who is respected by both her students and fellow
professors. She is also known as an excellent strategist in wizard duels, which can be seen clearly in
Rowling s last installment when McGonagall duels and defeats Snape when he is in search of Harry

Jane Eyre Independence
Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, is a novel that depicts strong female independence. Women being
independent and not needing a spouse to provide for them was not something very common in the
early nineteenth century; they were usually very dependent upon men for everything in their lives.
Women were not the primary wage earners and would usually feel helpless if they were not married.
In general, their happiness came from the fact that they had someone who was going to provide for
and marry them. The average woman lived to find a spouse and would not dare to say no at the offer
of a man s hand in marriage. However, Jane Eyre was just the opposite of the average woman of the
nineteenth century. Jane was independent in every way possible. Her ... Show more content on

The ones who meant the most to her had perished; her mom, dad, and Helen all passed away when she

who wrote A Speech Act Analysis of Jane Eyre , states, The directives in Jane s speeches illustrate her
willingness to be independent and not to be mastered by others. Bronte created a character who
wanted to be freed from the oppression of others since she was a child (Bell). From the moment she
left Gateshead, she had been on her own. The ride from Gateshead to Lowood was the start of her
independence. Jane was now responsible for herself. Even though she was sent to an orphanage, there
was not much caretaking done there. From then on, the only person that she could put her trust in was
herself. She felt the pain of rejection far too long in her younger years to just put her trust in anyone
who came along (Bell). In chapter twenty seven, Jane says, I care for myself. The more solitary, the
more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself (Bronte). This was a
moment where Jane was truly struggling with the idea of marrying Rochester. Even in her weakest
moments, she was able to remind herself how she had gotten this far in her life. Bell, the author of
Jane Eyre: The Tale of the Governess , states, She is threateningly intelligent, forthright to the point of
bluntness, submitting herself mentally to no one, not even when she finally does improbably win a
man s love. When she does marry Rochester, it is not because she needs him to survive. It is because
she simply wants to marry him. She left him and became truly independent. She found a new job and

Should Your Company Outsource IT?
IT service providers deliver the technical expertise small businesses need at a much lower cost than

and core competencies and ensure that critical data is safe. That s why nearly 70% of U.S. small to

Small businesses outsource IT services to ensure all their business systems, operations and networks
remain up and running. Managed IT services providers take a proactive approach to IT. Rather than
waiting for something to break or shut down, MSPs ensure a customer s IT can avoid most tech issues
in the first place. This is huge, because IT related downtime can have a devastating impact on revenue
and reputation especially for smaller businesses trying to grow.
SMB Managed IT Service Consumption
A recent survey by B2B research firm Clutch showed that 69% of U.S. SMBs use at least one IT
service provider, regardless of company size. 63% of respondents indicated they also have dedicated,
in house IT staff. However, this percentage was much lower among SMBs with 10 or fewer employees
only 31% of that group have in house IT staff.
MSPs typically deliver managed IT services on a flat rate or subscription basis; companies pay a fixed
amount, usually monthly, for a specific set of IT services. Some common examples include, but are
not limited to:
Application monitoring/management
Helpdesk
E mail
Security
Storage
Backup and Disaster Recovery
These IT services are typically offered either as packaged services, or a la carte, depending on the
needs of the SMB. They are also often priced at a fraction of the cost of a full time IT resource. MSPs
work with a variety of technology vendors in order to deliver

Psychopathy, a personality/mental disorder, in which an individual often display apathy in conjunction
with manipulation strategies, and without the ability to demonstrate remorse for wrong actions, is a
characteristic that has shown to be highly present in violent criminality. It is believe that the

behavior can be affected or influence by numerous variables, including age, sex, race, ethnicity or

interpreting how the villagers themselves are also dark and corrupt. An early description of the setting
in the story illustrates how in Mocondo it used to be sunny all the time but it had become a stew of
mud and rotten shellfish (Marques 406 409). Furthermore when Elisenda and Pelayo find the Old man
in the back yard, they don t know what to do so they seek help from their neighbor. The woman
neighbor had told them that he was an angel coming for the child and that they should club him to
death. This reflects how atrocious society can be. However Elisenda and Pelayo decide not kill him
but instead they settled by holding him captive in a chicken coop while it rained all night and the
chickens plugged at the already damaged angel wings, Demonstrating once again cruelty and
corruption. He wasn t valuable enough to enter the house, the angel was treated and locked up like a
worthless zoo animal. One of the first sings of corruption is the infiltration of the crabs in Elisenda and

Parody In Medusa
The classical tradition in the medieval times has an articulate work of art should stand by itself
without the need of interpretation. As one literally scholar would state, the classical era states that
interpretation is ambiguous, and does not always prevail . Yet, now in our society, art s interpretation
can be one or all: a parody, an abstract, a pastiche, or non art. Pain and suffering constituted things
with which for him to identify. His own family had made a grueling transition from the war and
turmoil ravaged areas of Prussia (now Czech) Although many of his works have become instantly
recognizeable, famous in their own right, the distinct themes of the classical tradition s work have no
direct meaning. The classical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Gericault referenced a tragic, contemporary event in The Raft of Medusa from 1819, The classical
tradition referenced events at the very time they occurred (see 127 Die in Jet , Tunafish Disaster ) . For
him, the borderline between simulated time and actual time was blurry and often nonexistent. Whether
events, people and things were real or not became debatable However flip and casual his observations
may have been, their credence (in this light) cannot be denied. The act of parody had very nearly
become his denouemont, an all too shocking reality, as well as History. As such, The classical tradition
had left his mark for the ages. The term, under this tradition became the rise of the Avant Garde is seen
widely used in the field of visual art and literature. The term derives from the military term, advanced
guard or vanguard and it reflects this movement s role in art history as well. By nature, this movement
was meant to be controversial desiring to challenge the traditional art and the society as a whole. In
the realm of the arts world, works of the Avant Garde carried characteristics which represented
pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm as well as tearing down the status quo.
Began in 1850 in France, this movement led many artists to initiate works that are experimental,
innovative and unconventional. The three essential features of an

Film Form
Week 2 Film: The Wizard of Oz
FORM: is the sum of all parts of the film, unified and given shape by patterns such as repetition and
variation, story lines and character traits.
Film is not the product of a random collection of technical devices, but rather, it is a system
THE CONCEPT OF FORM IN A FILM
Artworks involve us by engaging our senses, feelings and mind in a process.
The artwork cues the spectator to perform a specific activity.
 Example: A poem s words may guide us to imagine a scene, to notice a break in rhythm or to expect
a rhyme
Like all artworks, film is not simply a random batch of elements, film has a form.
Film form is the overall system of relations that we can perceive among the elements in the ... Show

I.e. A characters sly expression may prepare us for the later revelation of their villainous side
A tragic event might be undercut by lighthearted music
 Emotional response felt by the spectator
Just as formal Conventions can make us suspend our normal sense of real life experience; form may
lead us to override our everyday emotional responses.
 People who we Despise in life may become spellbinding as characters
 Wizard of Oz: We might find the land of Oz much more appealing than Kansas, but because the
films form leads us to sympathize with Dorothy in her desire to go home, we feel satisfied when she
finally returns home to Kansas.
Expectation spurs emotion
 To have an expectation about what will happen is to incest some emotion in the situation.
Delayed fulfillment of an emotion (suspense), may produce anxiety or sympathy
Gratified expectations may create a feeling of relief
Form and Meaning
When we watch films, we re looking to attribute a deeper significance or meaning to the artwork as a
whole.
As spectators we develop meaning based upon the juxtaposition of images and sounds in the film, and
the way we perceive them is shaped by our own cultural social experiences.

Women s Struggle For Equality
Women in American society have endured numerous struggles to fight for equality throughout history.
Today American women have come a long way by narrowing gender gaps and becoming successful in
aspects of life that are prominently male dominated. Although American women are living a better life
than they were years ago, they still deal with inequality when it comes to the workforce, income,
politics, domestic duties, and sex. The reason women are not equal to men in these aspects of life are
because men hold most of the jobs in the STEM fields of work, make higher incomes than women in
the same level of employment, dominate congress and the government, not looked upon to take care
of the house duties, and are praised for sex rather than shamed like women are. Living as an American
woman today is far from difficult but in contrast, living as an American man is still substantially
better. Women have dealt with constant battles in the workplace but the most important was the ability
to work alongside men in any field of employment. As stated in the article, Women in the Professional
Workplace by Jennifer Dorning, the status for women in the workforce has improved over the last
several decades, but many women still struggle for equality in many occupations (Dorning). For
example, women are extremely underrepresented in the fields of science, technology development,
and engineering making up only 20% of the people employed in these particular categories (Pinker).

Wendat Attributes In The Orenda
The blame game, described as someone assigning blame to others rather than finding a solution. This
game is a great way to try and fault others for one s own mistakes. In the book, The Orenda written by
Joseph Boyden, it is described how the aboriginal people of the Wendat became extirpated by their
enemies because of their own inadequacies. Throughout the course of the book, the Wendat make
awful decisions and because of such decisions the wendat nation becomes extinct. The Wendat are
prideful and some refuse to seek help even in the most desperate of times. The Wendat choose to
ignore the dreams of their people and the prophecies. The Wendat are also extremely greedy, their

Fox says, I d rather die naked and freezing than come here for protection (Boyden, pg 354) which
shows that Fox would rather die with absolutely nothing then live with the crows, their allies. In what
world does one not ask or accept help from their allies? Obviously in a proud and arrogant one. After
the Wendat had been decimated by the smallpox outbreak, they kept to themselves even more than
before. Another example of how the Wendat s pride causes issues is when Bird is negotiating peace
with the Iroquois he loses the Wampum. Instead of asking for forgiveness, he decides to go into battle.
Bird states, our story meant for these people who are our enemy, has been lost...I now know that the
course we are on...is a course of warfare. (Boyden, page 108) Bird does not even consider reasoning
with them or holding negotiations. The Wendat pride has caused its people many issues and ultimately
their own unfortunate demise. Though the Wendat were not solely responsible for their extirpation,
they played a large part of what happened to them because of how they were arrogant and chose to
disrespect those who wished to help them. Another factor that led to the demise of the Wendat people
is because they chose to ignore the pleas of their people and the prophetic dreams that warned them.
They also became entranced by the wealth the Europeans had to offer, so much so that they began to
shape their way of life around it. With all the problems the Wendat faced, it is a miracle that there are

Summary Of Attachment Theory
Article Summary
Anne Merrill and Tamara Afifi (2015) examine how attachment theory emotionally and cognitively
interacts with various secret keeping instances (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259). Research has shown that
secrecy has harmful affects such as, anxiety and stress (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp. 259 260). However
the level to which these individuals ponder, or ruminate, about the secret varies from person to person
(Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259).
Theoretically, these researchers utilize the preoccupation models of secrecy to explain why secrecy
negatively affects a person s well being (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 260). Research states, individuals in a
romantic relationship are likely to experience cognitive tension due to thought suppression and
intrusive thoughts (rumination), which continually repeat in efforts to maintain secrecy (Merrill, Afifi,
2015, pp. 260 261). Attachment theory states, those individuals who are securely attached (low
anxiety and avoidance) are less likely to keep secrets from their partner because they are more trusting
(Merrill, Afifi, 2015, 2015, p. 261). As oppose to individuals with high attachment avoidance, who

partner, while 12.6% reported they were not keeping any secrets from their partner (Merrill, Afifi,

(Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 265). Researcher s also found that the more avoidant individuals are, the less
likely they are to perceive their partner as having ownership over their secrets (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p.

Why Animals Survive The Winter Research Paper
With snow, ski season, and the holidays upon us, it is easy to tell that we ve made it into the winter
season. Luckily, winter doesn t mean we have to stay indoors! The Vail Valley offers the opportunity
to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, sled and a wide variety of other activities to stay active and outdoors in
the winter. However, unlike us, many animals are not able to remain active and outdoors for the winter
due to the bitter cold. Animals have a variety of mechanisms they use to survive the cold winters,
three of the strategies animals use to survive the winter are: adapting, hibernating, or migrating. For us
humans, adapting to the winter means turning up the heat in our houses, wearing winter coats, and
finding activities to replace the things we can no longer do outside. For animals, adapting is a bit more
difficult. Animals like elk and moose adapt to the frigid temperatures by growing thicker coats to keep
them warm, these coats will then be shed in the spring. Similarly, some animals change the color of
their coats. Snowshoe hare s coats change to white which is warmer and better at camouflaging with
the snow. White fur is warmer because the lack of pigment leaves more room for air to be trapped in ...

Bears are some of the best known hibernators. While in hibernation, bears still burn 4,000 calories a
day, meaning they need to store up many thousands of calories in their fat rolls in order to survive the
long winters. Another well known hibernator is the marmot, which will sleep in their burrows below
the snow for even longer than bears. Marmots can hibernate for up to eight months! They ve been
hibernating since about September and will wake up in May. In their state of hibernation, marmots
heart rate will drop to less than ten beats per minute and they will take less than five breaths per

Joan of Arc Essay
Joan of Arc In the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City the painting Joan of Arc by Jules
Bastien Lepage hangs in the B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Gallery. This Piece is rather large and was
done with oil paint on canvas, its dimensions being approximately eight feet tall with a width of ten
feet. When walking toward Bastien Lapage s painting, it s size and realism grabs one s attention, and
then holds it while this scene of Joan of Arc seems to take place right before one s eyes. The corridor
where the painting is displayed is part of the museums permanent collection. The gallery is composed
of many sculptures with paintings placed between them; almost all of the work is French and done
sometime in the 1800 s. This long ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
St. Michael is positioned perfectly upright with a majestic look as he is holding a sword away from his
body horizontally with both hands. His body is covered with a golden body suit of armor except for
his head, which is turned toward Joan and has a full halo behind it. Margaret and Catherine are both
wearing white silky and flowing veils on their heads. There are white flowers in their hair, and both
have golden circles over their heads as halos. Their dresses are also flowing and painted with light
pink and blue. Margaret is positioned upright, her hands clasped by her chest, and her head to the side
looking towards Joan, while Catherine is bent over with her head facing down and both hands over her
face.
Bastien Lepage showed his ability for capturing the naturalistic look of Joan, but he did not use this
ability to its full extent with the saints. The colors used on the saints are not quite as vivid as with
Joan. Michael s golden body armor and silver sword are not really shining at all, and all three halos
seem to be placed there without any real signs of glowing. The shadowing and detail work in their
clothing and skin are also not quite as life like as Joan. All together the three images of these saints
appear to be somewhat hazy.
The rest of the painting is a landscape of Joan s garden with the back wall of her house in the distance,
and in front of the saints is a stool

Response Bias
There are multiple types of survey methods utilized in research. Three of the main survey methods
include interviews, electronic surveys, and written surveys. In interviews, the assessor works directly
with the respondent to obtain responses to the survey. Utilizing interviews allow researchers to obtain
comprehensive and thorough responses. Moreover, the interviewer is able to follow up on certain
responses if more information is needed. Despite these benefits, interviews have some potential
disadvantages. It is difficult to obtain a representative sample of a population willing to participate in
an interview. Additionally, this type of survey is often costly in time and money. Furthermore, there is
potential for interviewer bias to affect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are several types of response biases that can impact the outcome of a study. Social desirability
bias is a type of response bias that occurs when an individual s response is chosen because of their
desire to look favorable, rather than their true feelings (Fisher, 1993). One way to decrease the effects
of the social desirability bias is to use electronic surveys; individuals are more likely to respond
honestly to electronic surveys due to their anonymity (Chamberlain, 2016). Another type of bias that
can alter the results of a study is known as acquiescent response bias. Acquiescence bias, also known
as yea saying, refers to the tendency of respondents to agree to questions regardless of the content
(Wright, 1975). The use of both negative and positive questions reduces the likelihood of this bias
occurring (Wright, 1975). Nonresponse bias is another type of bias that may occur when using a
survey. This type of bias occurs when the responses from the individuals who respond to the survey
differ from those who did not respond (Armstrong Overton, 1977). Nonresponse bias often occurs in
written surveys, particularly in mail surveys (Armstrong Overton, 1977). In addition, using questions
that favor one response or another can cause a response bias to occur. Researchers can avoid leading
questions by using neutral words to formulate their survey. Anytime response bias occurs the validity
of the results may be compromised (Chamberlain, 2016). It is imperative researchers utilize
procedures to check for response bias to avoid making false conclusions based on a systematic
response bias rather than the hypothesized

Who Invented Gunpowder
Gunpowder was one of the most revolutionary inventions in warfare. It shifted many different aspects
of war including weapons, battlefield tactics and fortifications. Even though gunpowder and
gunpowder weaponry originated from China it was the Europeans who utilized and invested the most
into gunpowder technology. This investment in weaponry is what made Europeans more powerful
than the rest of the world. By the 15th, 16th and 17th century the Europeans had surpassed the
Chinese in the construction of firearms. One of the reasons why the Europeans drove this innovation
was because of the amount of wars that were fought in Europe during this time period. More wars
meant more investments in weapons and tactics. Thus gunpowder brought about a military revolution
which changed the system in which wars were fought. From the beginnings of gunpowder in China to

I will argue that the development of gunpowder and gunpowder weapons brought about a military
revolution in Europe which changed the way wars were fought. The areas of change in warfare I will
be focusing on are ground warfare, naval warfare and siege warfare. I will also look at the beginnings
of gunpowder in China as it is important to understand on the basis on which the Europeans were
expanding on.
The specifics on when and how gunpowder was invented is greatly debated among historians. The
different constituents of gunpowder were known as far back as the 1st Century CE. Charcoal was used
for heating while sulphur and saltpeter were mentioned in texts dating from the 1st century BCE.
Some historians suggest that taoist alchemist during the third century CE knew of the explosive
property of gunpowder but this can t be proven. According to Wang Ling gunpowder was

The Global Economy Has Become Large Size, Breadth And...
The global economy has become massive in size, breadth and diversity. There are enormous
opportunities but they are also fraught with complexity. The interconnectedness between fast growing
and mature regions has vastly increased the complexity, number and range of stakeholder relationships
that must be managed. Business complexity is increasing every day. Although initiating a business is
easier than a decade ago, sustaining and growing a business is more difficult than ever. When you
consider the last decades leading organizations, some of them have already vanished or lost market
share despite their large size. Some of today s leading organizations may not exist in the next decade
due to challenges in managing complexity.

When you reduce complexity, you increase your ability to implement new solutions, says André
Mendes, CIO of the Special Olympics. Complexity leads to brittleness and high costs, notes Frank
Modruson, CIO of Accenture. But if you get your technology cleaner, you can serve the business more
easily. Today, all CIOs are standing in the path of a fire hose spewing complexity. And many are
getting soaked.
Within IT, factors that increase complexity include outsourcing management, the adoption of Web and
consumer technologies, and support for mobile workforces, developing and managing technology
architectures and governance for those workforces, and ensuring security in a distributed environment.
Outside of IT s direct control, complexity is increased by the requirements of compliance, the need to
support global business, and the speed and depth of access to information demanded by your
customers and your partners. Companies can with difficulty handle these challenges individually, one
at a time. But in the real world companies face many, if not all, of these challenges, all at once, over
and over. That s why you need a strategy to keep complexity out of the environment. The challenge of
complexity is exacerbated by the fact that many

Dark Matter In The Human Genome Essay

the human genome. During the Human Genome Project, the first establish genome sequence shows
that there were a lack of use of DNA in our body. Only a certain amount of the human genome s DNA
encode protein sequences while the rest are non coding DNA. The non coding DNA serves a purpose

  • 2. War I And Sick Of War According to William Tecumseh Sherman, he is tired and sick of war. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell. This statement is self explanatory; the nature of war is reckless. Yes, when experiencing war, some soldiers may come across gratifying sounds of larks, song birds, which remind them of ebullient moments. Nevertheless, is brutally fighting really worth that? Roughly ten million soldiers lost their lives in World War I, along with seven million civilians; also, many soldiers experienced shell shock, which is a psychological disturbance caused by war. As a result of the heinous and atrocious experiences that many were put through, this inspired many poets to record their remembrances. Although war may bring memories of happiness because of the pleasing sounds, war should be considered a crime regardless of how necessary or justified it seems because war leads to mental anguish due to the memories of physical pain, soldiers being frightened because of unexpected occurrences and ferocious deaths. In the poem Mental Cases by Wilfred Owen, Owen describes in stark detail the ghastly physical symptoms and memories that led to long lasting mental torment. A few months before Owen was killed in action in 1918, he wrote this poem that appears to draw heavily on his own experience of being a mental case at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh where ... • 3. A Wrinkle in Time Essay By: Madeleine L Engle Book Report By: Madeleine L Engle a French author uses a creative mixture of science and fairy tale magic for building the story line in her book A Wrinkle in Time. From beginning to end Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin go through adventure after adventure bursting with animated fairy tale characteristics. This book has a model preteen coming of age theme. The three are intertwined naturally, and work well within the science fiction twist of this very unbelievable fantasy tale. The main character Meg Murry is the perfect innocent child turned into a hero. The beginning of the story presents a 13 year old Meg as young, and constantly wallowing in self pity. Meg enters the first chapter emotionally immature with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The children soon realize that there are no nice people in Camazotz . In fact, Camazotz, which is under the influence of the Black Thing which has defeated the planet, seriously threatens their lives. As in many fairy tales, special gifts are presented to the children. Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Who, accompany them on the hill overlooking Camazotz, assuring in a fairy godmother manner that they will be near, and they will be watching then one by one they Give a precious talisman for each child. Calvin is given his ability to communicate and a piece of Shakespeare s The Tempest, Charles Wallace is given the resilience of his childhood and a caution to remember that you do not know everything. Meg, much to her dismay, is given her faults, and much to her surprise, Mrs. Who s wacky glasses. With only these gifts, and each other to lean on, the children now begin to test their limits as they are forced to rely on their own thoughts and decisions in search for Mr. Murry. Throughout the book Madeleine L Engle uses personified objects to bring the story to life. On the planet Uriel creatures like the one Mrs. Whatsit had become were making music, music that came not only from their throats but from the movements of their great wings as well. Mixing fantasy with subtle Christianity the resonant voices rose and the words seem to be all around them Meg could almost reach out and touch them ‘Sing unto the Lord a ... • 4. Comparing Mary Shelley s Frankenstein and the Prometheus... Comparing Mary Shelley s Frankenstein and the Prometheus Myth Mary Shelley s Frankenstein is subtitled The Modern Prometheus , and rightfully so. Prometheus, the Titan of Greek mythology that created man and gave them fire, is a fitting symbol for Victor Frankenstein, the man who created a monster and gave him life. The most obvious aspect of the similarity between Frankenstein and the Prometheus myth is the underlying theme both stories deal with ill fated actions with tragic consequences. The classic Prometheus stories, as told by Aeschylus, Percy Bysshe Shelley and summarized by Edith Hamilton, contain symbolic and thematic elements that closely parallel Mary Shelley s modern Prometheus. Both characters had supposedly good intentions that were tainted through the fulfilment of their cause. Frankenstein believed that, a new species will bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me (32). Prometheus insists that his actions had a similar impact I risked the bord attempt, and saved mankind / From stark destruction and the road to hell... And in a single word to sum the whole / All manner of arts men from Prometheus learned. (Aeschylus). In both cases, these ideas, deluded or realistic, were not the actual or only outcome of their gifts . In Percy Bysshe Shelley s interpretation of the Prometheus myth, Prometheus is faced with the consequences of his gift of fire (and of creating the human race). ...Thy name I will not speak It hath become a curse. • 6. Essay on The Social Causes of Suicide and Durkheim s Theory Durkheim was a functionalist, and theorised that a holistic social narrative could be identified which would explain individual behaviour. He argued that, whilst society was made up of its members, it was greater than the sum of its parts, and was an external pressure that determined the behaviour of the individuals within it. At that time, suicide rates in Europe were rising, and so the causes of suicide were on the agenda. Since suicide is seen as an intrinsically personal and individual action, establishing it as having societal causes would be a strong defence for Durkheim s functionalist perspective. Durkheim used the comparative method to study the official suicide rates of various European countries. While he was not the first to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Durkheim does not see egoism, altruism, anomie and fatalism as types of suicide, but types of social structure that highlight the presence or lack of integration and regulation. It must be stressed that this excess/lack of integration and regulation are not seen as direct causes of suicide, rather Durkheim sees a number of voluntary deaths in society as inevitable; integration and regulation are merely prophylactic to suicidal impulses, which when taken to excess or dramatically reduced, fail to act as a preventative, and so suicides occur. This clarification is an important strength of Durkheim s theory: it allows the biography of the individuals who kill themselves to vary, while still explaining underlying pressures/lack of to explain their deaths, and the varying suicide rates between groups. There are various criticisms of Durkheim s methods and conclusions. His first great weakness must be seen as his treatment of fatalism. Durkheim himself says it has little contemporary importance (1951: 276), and Bearmann (1991) and Lehmann (1995) note how little coverage is given to it. Lehmann is particularly condemning, saying, since fatalism is restricted to primitives and women, Durkheim finds it uninteresting and relegates it to a footnote (1995: 918). There were many points of commonality between their evaluation of our gifted program, and my own personal evaluation, but there are also points of contradiction. One particular point I agree with is that a major strength of our gifted program is that our district is diligently working to improve the program, within our capabilities. We are of course, limited by financial resources and time, of which our coordinators have little control. In an attempt to be more responsive to the needs of our district, and more inclusive, in 2016, our district adopted a new identification process for the gifted program that included three different pathways to ... • 11. The s Portrayal Of The Vampire Vampirisms Portrayal Many years ago in Wallachia, Romania, there was a price by the name of Vlad III Tepes. This man was seen by many people of Romania as well as other parts of Europe, as a hero for his protection of the north and south Romanians in which he was later recognized and honored in his leadership. At first, he had many followers, but then they started to fade due to his practices of impaling his enemies, he was labeled The Impeller. His reputation started to grow in a negative way because of the excessive cruelty. This excessiveness of cruelty against his enemies cause a lot of blood shedding in which this started the beginning of the vampire myth. Throughout time, we can see that the myth of vampires has not only stayed in Romania. We see it in literature dating back to the very beginning or discovery of this creature through the cruelty of Prince Vlad III. However, the portrayal of the vampire did not stay the same as time went by. The portrayal of vampirism has come long ways and changed as society did. The specific roles and details of the vampires are crafted in relation to what society wants. However, the symbolic meaning behind the vampire stays the same even if their role has changed; they represent what we both fear and desire as humans: beauty, strength, and immortality. Millions have faithfully followed the story about this magical world and have fallen in love with the many enchanting characters. What most readers do not recognize is the prominence that classical Greek/Roman mythological allusions play in the beloved roles in Harry Potter through their names and personality attributes. The importance of names is extremely significant to a person s identity, especially in literature where words are meant to bring stories to life. Rowling continues this concept through her characters by linking her characters names to classical folklore charismas that share similar personas. Rowling does a fantastic job with cleverly connecting her characters to classical Greek/Roman mythological figures through the etymology of their names and similar personality traits to their wizard counterparts, such as Professor McGonagall and Filch. An apparent allusion to a classical mythological figure is the Hogwarts transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall. Professor McGonagall is an extremely intelligent woman, which is seen because she is tenured teacher who is respected by both her students and fellow professors. She is also known as an excellent strategist in wizard duels, which can be seen clearly in Rowling s last installment when McGonagall duels and defeats Snape when he is in search of Harry ... Women being independent and not needing a spouse to provide for them was not something very common in the early nineteenth century; they were usually very dependent upon men for everything in their lives. Women were not the primary wage earners and would usually feel helpless if they were not married. In general, their happiness came from the fact that they had someone who was going to provide for and marry them. The average woman lived to find a spouse and would not dare to say no at the offer of a man s hand in marriage. Rohmah, who wrote A Speech Act Analysis of Jane Eyre , states, The directives in Jane s speeches illustrate her willingness to be independent and not to be mastered by others. Bronte created a character who wanted to be freed from the oppression of others since she was a child (Bell). From the moment she left Gateshead, she had been on her own. The ride from Gateshead to Lowood was the start of her independence. Jane was now responsible for herself. Even though she was sent to an orphanage, there was not much caretaking done there. From then on, the only person that she could put her trust in was herself. She felt the pain of rejection far too long in her younger years to just put her trust in anyone who came along (Bell). In chapter twenty seven, Jane says, I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself (Bronte). This was a moment where Jane was truly struggling with the idea of marrying Rochester. Even in her weakest moments, she was able to remind herself how she had gotten this far in her life. Bell, the author of Jane Eyre: The Tale of the Governess , states, She is threateningly intelligent, forthright to the point of bluntness, submitting herself mentally to no one, not even when she finally does improbably win a man s love. When she does marry Rochester, it is not because she needs him to survive. It is because she simply wants to marry him. She left him and became truly independent. SMB Managed IT Service Consumption A recent survey by B2B research firm Clutch showed that 69% of U.S. SMBs use at least one IT service provider, regardless of company size. 63% of respondents indicated they also have dedicated, in house IT staff. However, this percentage was much lower among SMBs with 10 or fewer employees only 31% of that group have in house IT staff. MSPs typically deliver managed IT services on a flat rate or subscription basis; companies pay a fixed amount, usually monthly, for a specific set of IT services. Some common examples include, but are not limited to: Application monitoring/management Helpdesk E mail Security Storage Backup and Disaster Recovery These IT services are typically offered either as packaged services, or a la carte, depending on the

In the story by Gabriel Garcia Marques A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings this is portray, by showing how cruel and imperfect society can be. In the beginning of the story the weather in Mocondo the town where the story takes place, is used as a symbol of corruption. In Mocondo is always dark and rainy, interpreting how the villagers themselves are also dark and corrupt. An early description of the setting in the story illustrates how in Mocondo it used to be sunny all the time but it had become a stew of mud and rotten shellfish (Marques 406 409). Furthermore when Elisenda and Pelayo find the Old man in the back yard, they don t know what to do so they seek help from their neighbor. The woman neighbor had told them that he was an angel coming for the child and that they should club him to death. This reflects how atrocious society can be. However Elisenda and Pelayo decide not kill him but instead they settled by holding him captive in a chicken coop while it rained all night and the chickens plugged at the already damaged angel wings, Demonstrating once again cruelty and corruption. • 25. Women s Struggle For Equality Women in American society have endured numerous struggles to fight for equality throughout history. Today American women have come a long way by narrowing gender gaps and becoming successful in aspects of life that are prominently male dominated. Although American women are living a better life than they were years ago, they still deal with inequality when it comes to the workforce, income, politics, domestic duties, and sex. The reason women are not equal to men in these aspects of life are because men hold most of the jobs in the STEM fields of work, make higher incomes than women in the same level of employment, dominate congress and the government, not looked upon to take care of the house duties, and are praised for sex rather than shamed like women are. Living as an American woman today is far from difficult but in contrast, living as an American man is still substantially better. Women have dealt with constant battles in the workplace but the most important was the ability to work alongside men in any field of employment. As stated in the article, Women in the Professional Workplace by Jennifer Dorning, the status for women in the workforce has improved over the last several decades, but many women still struggle for equality in many occupations (Dorning). • 27. Summary Of Attachment Theory Article Summary Anne Merrill and Tamara Afifi (2015) examine how attachment theory emotionally and cognitively interacts with various secret keeping instances (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259). Research has shown that secrecy has harmful affects such as, anxiety and stress (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp. 259 260). However the level to which these individuals ponder, or ruminate, about the secret varies from person to person (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 259). Theoretically, these researchers utilize the preoccupation models of secrecy to explain why secrecy negatively affects a person s well being (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, p. 260). Research states, individuals in a romantic relationship are likely to experience cognitive tension due to thought suppression and intrusive thoughts (rumination), which continually repeat in efforts to maintain secrecy (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, pp. 260 261). Attachment theory states, those individuals who are securely attached (low anxiety and avoidance) are less likely to keep secrets from their partner because they are more trusting (Merrill, Afifi, 2015, 2015, p. 261). Luckily, winter doesn t mean we have to stay indoors! The Vail Valley offers the opportunity to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, sled and a wide variety of other activities to stay active and outdoors in the winter. However, unlike us, many animals are not able to remain active and outdoors for the winter due to the bitter cold. Animals have a variety of mechanisms they use to survive the cold winters, three of the strategies animals use to survive the winter are: adapting, hibernating, or migrating. For us humans, adapting to the winter means turning up the heat in our houses, wearing winter coats, and finding activities to replace the things we can no longer do outside. For animals, adapting is a bit more difficult. Animals like elk and moose adapt to the frigid temperatures by growing thicker coats to keep them warm, these coats will then be shed in the spring. Similarly, some animals change the color of their coats. Snowshoe hare s coats change to white which is warmer and better at camouflaging with the snow. Social desirability bias is a type of response bias that occurs when an individual s response is chosen because of their desire to look favorable, rather than their true feelings (Fisher, 1993). One way to decrease the effects of the social desirability bias is to use electronic surveys; individuals are more likely to respond honestly to electronic surveys due to their anonymity (Chamberlain, 2016). Another type of bias that can alter the results of a study is known as acquiescent response bias. Acquiescence bias, also known as yea saying, refers to the tendency of respondents to agree to questions regardless of the content (Wright, 1975). The use of both negative and positive questions reduces the likelihood of this bias occurring (Wright, 1975). Nonresponse bias is another type of bias that may occur when using a survey. This type of bias occurs when the responses from the individuals who respond to the survey differ from those who did not respond (Armstrong Overton, 1977). Nonresponse bias often occurs in written surveys, particularly in mail surveys (Armstrong Overton, 1977). In addition, using questions that favor one response or another can cause a response bias to occur. Researchers can avoid leading questions by using neutral words to formulate their survey. Anytime response bias occurs the validity of the results may be compromised (Chamberlain, 2016). It is imperative researchers utilize procedures to check for response bias to avoid making false conclusions based on a systematic response bias rather than the hypothesized ...
