Belly dance originated in Northern Africa and spread to the Middle East, traditionally performed by women for women to demonstrate childbirth. It involves movements of the hips and whole body, especially the shimmy, swinging arms, hip punches, and undulation. The classic belly dance costume is the bedlah which includes a fitted top and skirt with hip belt.
