The Japanese launched two surprise air attacks in waves about 45 minutes apart, targeting U.S. battleships and aircraft carriers. The attack damaged or destroyed 8 U.S. battleships and over 300 aircraft, bringing the U.S. into World War II.

4. WHAT HAPPENED AT PEARL HARBOR?
• The Japanese attacked the United States by surprise at Pearl Harbor.
• The attack brought the United States into World War II.
• The Japanese used the code name "Operation Hawaii" for the attack on Pearl Harbor.
They later changed it to "Operation Z."

5. WHEN DID THE ATTACK HAPPEN?
• December 7th, 1941
• The attack lasted 110 minutes, from 7:55 a.m. until 9:45 a.m.
• Plans for the surprise attack on the United States begun as early as January 1941.
• The Japanese specifically chose to attack on a Sunday because they believed Americans
would be more relaxed and less alert on a weekend.

6. WHY DID JAPAN ATTACK PEARL HARBOR?
• Japan was at war with China & needed more resources to fight.
• Most of their resources like oil came from the US.
• The US did not approve of Japanese aggression in China so they declared an embargo
on Japan. This meant America would stop supplying Japan with the resources they
needed to keep fighting.
• So the Japanese decided to launch a surprise attack on America’s naval base in Pearl
Harbor, Hawaii

7. HOW DID JAPAN ATTACK PEARL HARBOR?
• The Japanese attack force stationed approximately 230 miles north of the Hawaiian
island, Oahu.
• The Japanese launched their airplanes in two waves, approximately 45 minutes apart.
• The first wave of planes struck Pearl Harbor at 7:55 a.m. The second wave around 8:40
a.m.
• The main target of the Japanese were the aircraft carriers; however, all three U.S. aircraft
carriers were out to sea, so the Japanese focused on the battleships.

a.m., the Americans didn't
realize the attack was over.
They expected another
wave to hit.
• The United States declared
war on Japan on December
8, 1941, the day after the
attack on Pearl Harbor.
