The Japanese attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941 in an effort to prevent the U.S. from interfering with its military actions in Asia. The Japanese launched two surprise air attacks in waves about 45 minutes apart, targeting U.S. battleships and aircraft carriers. The attack damaged or destroyed 8 U.S. battleships and over 300 aircraft, bringing the U.S. into World War II.
