The Battle of Midway in June 1942 was a major turning point in WWII in the Pacific. The U.S. had cracked the Japanese naval code and laid an ambush for the Japanese fleet, which was planning to attack Midway Island. Though outnumbered, the Americans sank four Japanese aircraft carriers with the element of surprise, inflicting major losses and changing the course of the war in the Pacific in their favor with the loss of only 362 of their own men.
