BARRIER OF COMMUNICATION
Any unplanned element or
unexpected
disturbance which result in breakage
or failure of communication,
miscommunication or
ineffective communication is known
as a
‘barrier.’
Barrier can be created by humans or
they may
be situational.
Types of Barriers
The barriers are divided chiefly in seven
types,
such as:
Intrapersonal
Interpersonal
Organizational
Intrapersonal Barriers
These barriers are created by
human himself;
in other words created by the
sender of the message.
They are further divided in four
types:
Wrong Assumptions
Varied Perceptions
Wrong Inference
Categorical Thinking
•Wrong Assumption
Here the speaker or the sender of the
message is having wrong ideas or
misunderstanding about the knowledge
of the
listener.
•Varied Perception
Some people fail to realize that different
people
may see and understand similar
conditions in
different ways according to their
different
backgrounds and societies and this may
result in
a barrier.
•Wrong Inference
When people are having prejudices or
partialities, negative attitude to
something or
someone, they are having wrong
inferences
for the people around and it may create
a
barrier.
For e.g., if you dislike any of your
relative, you
will avoid meeting or interacting with
that
•Categorical Thinking
When any person is very
stubborn or rigid and
is having ‘I know everything’
attitude, is
known to have categorical
thinking. This kind
of persons will avoid healthy and
two way
communication.
They will prefer to be senders,
rather than
receivers.
Interpersonal Barriers
Interpersonal barriers are
created because of
inappropriate transaction or
understanding of
the message among people.
They are as following:
Limited Vocabulary
Lack of Non-verbal
Communication
Selective Communication
Poor Listening Skills
Various Cultures
• Limited Vocabulary
If the persons are having less
knowledge
about grammar and vocabulary, they will
not
understand the meaning and
communication
fails.
For e.g., if you use the word
‘malnourished’ in
your communication, the listener must
know
the meaning, otherwise meaning will not
• Lack of Non-verbal
Communication
The speaker should have proper
NVC to
support communication. Lack of it
makes
communication ineffective.
The use of gestures, expressions,
charts,
posters etc. should be done to
enhance the
effect of communication.
 Selective Communication
During the communication, if you listen
or
take part only in selected areas or you
talk
only with selected people and avoid
communication with others, it may create
a
Barrier.
 Poor Listening Skills
Sometimes people are so deeply involved in
thinking or doing any activity that they do
not
pay attention to the communication going
around. This is known as poor listening
skills.
For e.g., during any business meeting an
employee is thinking about holidays, he/she
will not listen to the discussion going on.
 Various Cultures
People from different cultures, societies
or
backgrounds will have different thinking
and ideologies. Sometimes lack of
knowledge of other cultures will lead to
miscommunication.
Cross cultural knowledge should be there
for effective communication.
 Organizational Barriers
Organizational barriers will disturb
communication of any organization or
institution. Here are the barriers:
 Fear of Superiors
 Use of Inappropriate Media
 Information Overload
 Too Many Transfer Stations
• Fear of Superiors
In some of the organizations the
authorities create autocratic environment
and because of the fear of superiors the
employees cannot speak freely.
So, it’s the duty f the authorities to
create
fearless and democratic environment
where people can communicate freely.
 Use of Inappropriate Media
While choosing the medium of
communication, one should keep in mind
the requirements, advantages,
disadvantages of that particular medium.
If the medium is wrongly chosen the
communication will fail or
miscommunication will occur
 Information Overload
If in any institution the employees are
given inadequate data or huge amount of
data, it will create information overload .
This will create unnecessary stress in the
minds which will result ultimately in
ineffective communication.
 Too Many Transfer Stations
The sender sends any message and it
reaches
to the receiver via many transfer stations,
the
message will get distorted or will be
changed.
