Presented at the Research Triangle PowerShell Users Group, Durham NC, September 17, 2014
As the role of the SharePoint Administrator continues to evolve, as have the tools. PowerShell has become an integral component of the SharePoint Administrator’s tool bag, whether administering SharePoint On-Premises, or as an Office 365 solution. In this session, we’ll look at day-to-day use cases of PowerShell as the primary tool for SharePoint administration, as well as the differences and restrictions between PowerShell for SharePoint On-Premise and O365.
While many people see the intranet as a pretty (hopefully) homepage, in reality the modern enterprise intranet is a complex animal of many moving parts. Structuring of the information within the intranet, how that information is presented to the user, how the user interacts with it, how the organization manages it, and the physical branding that sits on top of all of it are all critical conversations to have if an intranet is going to be effective. In this session we’ll explore the building blocks of a successful intranet and discuss common intranet pitfalls to avoid on your next intranet roll-out.

Enhancing SharePoint 2010 for the iPad (Richmond SPUG 10/31/2012)Michael Greene
Despite being marketed as an entertainment device rather than a mobile platform for business, the iPad continues to gain traction as a mobile device for the next generation business user. For some organizations, the rich user interaction and usability afforded by the iPad is a compelling reason to work towards cross-platform capability or iPad specific versions of line-of-business systems. In this session we’ll review custom iPad specific enhancements for SharePoint 2010, including changes to the user interface based on the orientation of the device. - See more at: http://mike-greene.com/2011/02/02/trispug-presentation-212011/#sthash.9aMfnjgs.dpuf

The Rise of SharePoint as a Business Critical HubDan Barker
SharePoint has matured since its inception in the early 2000’s from a product that provides a lot of important features to a full blown platform that small and large business are building critical solutions on. The average $1 billion company maintains, on average, 48 disparate financial systems and uses 2.7 ERP systems. SharePoint enables incredible interoperability to these various systems in a way that’s consistent across various groups within the enterprise. In this session we will talk about how SharePoint can be used to create convergence across the various line of business systems in a way that not only saves time and money but also breaks down silos that impeded productivity and innovation.
SharePoint 2016 Migration Success Takes Three StepsAdam Levithan
Your successful migration to SharePoint 2016 takes three actions: analysis, optimization and planning.
It also takes a lot of questions that require answers. What do you have? What do you move? What do you archive? What problems might occur? What do users expect? From identifying content sprawl, deciding what to archive, understanding potential security risks, ending performance issues and creating an environment that meets end-user expectations, requires many questions that need good answers.
In this session, you’ll learn what to ask and how to find answers: Understand your current environment
Maximizing SharePoint 2016 features
Accurately plan your migration
Reduce risk in your SharePoint migration
The Future of SharePoint - SharePoint 2016Don Donais

How to Leverage SharePoint 2013 to Organize, Label, Navigate, and Search Your...J. Kevin Parker, CIP
At the end of this presentation, you should be able to articulate why good information architecture (IA) makes SharePoint better; identify the four systems of IA components; leverage SharePoint features for improved information management; and build dynamic information management solutions in SharePoint without code.
This 60 min webinar will introduce you to all the ideas and best practices for migration of SharePoint workflows from SP2010 to SP2013. After this webinar, you will be able to plan your migration strategy for SharePoint workflows - an important component in the overall SharePoint architecture.
Our SharePoint Expert Consultant will share his personal experiences of migrating workflows in SharePoint.
Overview of the Webinar Topics
- Personal Experiences in Workflow Migration
- 5 Steps to Migrate SharePoint OOTB Workflows
- 4 Keys to Migrate SharePoint Designer Workflows
- 3 Challenges in Migrating SharePoint Custom Workflows
- Workflow Migration using Visual Studio 2012
- Leveraging Workflow Manager in SharePoint 2013
Structuring Serendipitous Collaboration - Nick Inglis at Collab365 ConferenceNick Inglis
How do you structure SharePoint to enable collaboration? It isn't a problem you can simply throw technology at to solve, it requires careful planning of your Information Architecture and the application of SharePoint Governance.
Leveraging microsoft’s e discovery platform in your organizationDon Donais
Statistics around eDiscovery implementations are staggering: 90% of US companies are engaged in some sort of litigation with an average eDiscovery case costing around $1 million. Organizations can leverage their Microsoft investment without having to purchase expensive add-ons. This session will look at how to configure and use the Microsoft eDiscovery platform.
With the arrival of SharePoint 2013 on the market and the push for Office 365, many are planning to make the move on to this new version of SharePoint. I consider myself lucky to have already participated to a few of these so far. Often, I come across some challenges in the organization surrounding this upgrade. I thought I would put up this post and hopefully some of you will continue the reasons a migration can fail through the comments.
The majority of SharePoint migration planning has little to do with the technical move, but is more about information architecture, data transformation, and other PM and BA skills. This presentation outlines 5 key areas of planning.
Your users may struggle with these questions:
• Should I share a message via Skype for Business instead of Yammer, Office 365 Groups, or Exchange?
• Should I collaborate on data using an Excel sheet or a SharePoint list?
• Should I share a file in Outlook, in a meeting, from OneDrive for Business, on Yammer, in a Group, or in a SharePoint site?
What happens when your users can't decide what technology or feature to use? They use what they know, or what’s easy; even if better options exist. In this session, join Richard Harbridge as he helps you maximize the value of your Office 365 investment by providing the guidance you need to help your users make better, more effective decisions on how they get work done.

Social in hybriden SharePoint 2016-UmgebungenAvePoint
Presented by Thomas Lorenz, Technical Solutions Professional at AvePoint at SharePoint Days Munich on December 2, 2015

You may have heard of PowerShell, but do you know what it’s capable of? Gone are the days of long, painful STSADM batch files – we have Windows PowerShell, and it’s here to stay.Learn how you can use Windows PowerShell both to perform simple one-off tasks as well as complex, bulk operations. Leveraging the Object Model gives Administrators and Developers the ability to do in a few lines of code what would’ve taken a lot more work (and probably a Developer or two) in the WSS platform.
In this demo filled session, you’ll see how you can get started with PowerShell, and you will hopefully leave with not only a greater understanding of what PowerShell is – but what it is capable of and how you can start using it to automate tasks in your SharePoint 2010 or 2013 environment.
PowerShell Basics for Office Apps and ServersGreg McMurray
Learn the basics of PowerShell - what it is, where it came from, and where it can take you. See how it can interact with the various Office Servers including SharePoint both on-premises and in the cloud with SharePoint Online. See how it can easily help you parse data, transform it, and then push it back to those same servers with ease. This was delivered at SharePoint Saturday Utah 2019.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
