Exploration of Culture in an EFL Setting.

After completing the eight-week course, I am now able to:
 Define intercultural competence
 Define critical thinking
 Develop an increased understanding of experiential learning and its elements:
observation, inquiry, multiple perspective analysis, and self-reflection
 Further develop my ability to learn and teach intercultural competence
 Further develop my ability to learn and teach critical thinking
 Further develop my ability to learn and teach the skills of active listening and
empathy
 Develop my own beliefs about the teaching of culture in our context
 Create lesson plans which integrate cultural learning and critical thinking
 Reflect on and critically analyze our lessons.

Expectations:
This course aimed to improve our intercultural
competence and critical thinking skills. It also aimed
to improve our ability to teach these to our students.
To do this, the course used the model of experiential
learning. In experiential learning, learning is based
on real life experiences.

Why do people from different cultures sometimes have misunderstandings or conflicts? Because they
can interpret the same thing differently. Some behaviors that are polite in one culture can seem rude
in another culture. Clothing that is very nice in one cultural context can be entirely inappropriate in
another.
This is why we spent some time in Module 3 looking at the difference
between observation and interpretation. People from any two cultures should be able to make the
same observations, but their interpretations can be very different. This is because they attach
different cultural meanings to what they observe.

  • 9. 9 Module-04: Intercultural Communication Why do people from different cultures sometimes have misunderstandings or conflicts? Because they can interpret the same thing differently. Some behaviors that are polite in one culture can seem rude in another culture. Clothing that is very nice in one cultural context can be entirely inappropriate in another. This is why we spent some time in Module 3 looking at the difference between observation and interpretation. People from any two cultures should be able to make the same observations, but their interpretations can be very different.
