This document provides an overview of new and innovative uses of Bluetooth technology, including: 1) A submarine that uses Bluetooth to send data on variables it measures in a nuclear fuel storage pond. 2) A guitar amplifier and speaker that streams music via Bluetooth and allows effects customization via an app. 3) A hotel pilot project replacing key cards with Bluetooth room door locks connected to guest smartphones. 4) Baby accessories that use Bluetooth to monitor things like temperature, respiration and sleep patterns. 5) A Bluetooth-connected toothbrush that tracks brushing habits and sends data to dentists. 6) A hair clip that detects attacks and uses Bluetooth to access a phone's GPS, camera and mic for emergency response

Introduction to Power-Point
Purpose:
To assist new and beginning users to create a simple power point presentation. Please
make sure to read the advanced HOW TO, as there really is a lot of neat stuff you can do
with power point.
Considerations
This HOWTO is for PowerPoint 2003 running Windows XP pro at Hunter College Campus
Schools. Although PowerPoint is ubiquitous, and you should have no trouble using these
directions elsewhere, please be aware every system is different. ☺
HOW TO:
Starting PowerPoint is easy. Simply click start -> Programs -> Microsoft Office ->

Parts of power point
Once started, you will see the screen below. Let’s take a look at some of the parts of
Powerpoint
The menu bar holds all the familiar menus; File Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Slide
Show, Window, and Help.
The slide organizer lists all your slides. If you have one or two slides, you don’t have to
worry about this part. If you have 20 or 30 slides, you will certainly want to pay attention to
this.
The slide view is the currently selected slide. This lets you see the current slide you are
working on.
The task pane changes depending what you are doing. We will be using the task pane for
just about everything, so it’s a good idea to pay attention to this area of powerpoint.
Setting up your slides and using templates
There is a difference between slide layout and slide template. A template is how a slide
looks (color, background picture, bullet color, etc). A layout is how the text and/or pictures
are arranged on the slide.
One of the fun parts of using PowerPoint is using templates. Templates give your
presentation a “look and feel”. To change your template, click on the task pane and choose
Slide Design.

You should see a list of different slides designs. Simply click on the template you want, and it
will be applied to your presentation.
Setting up a slide layout
While your template will probably be the same for every slide, the layout will likely be
different. Once again, click on the task pane and this time, choose Slide Layout.
You should see a list of different slides layouts. Simply click on the layout you want, and it
will be applied to the active slide. Each layout lends itself to a different type of content
delivery. Experiment with a layout you like!
Changing and adding text
Thankfully, changing and adding text in PowerPoint is really easy. See where it says click to
add text? Just do that.

If you want to add a bullet to your presentation, simply push enter after each idea. Keep in
mind, if you change the layout of a slide after you’ve typed something, PowerPoint will try to
fit your writing in the slide – it may not look quite right.
Adding, deleting, and moving slides
To add a new slide, simply click on the Insert menu, and click on New Slide.
You can then change the layout as described above. To delete a slide, simply click on the
slide organizer and push the delete key on your keyboard. To move a slide from one place to
another, simply click and drag the slide to another place. It’s pretty easy!

Click on the Slide Show menu, and then view show. Alternatively, you can hit F5 on your
keyboard. If you want to start the slideshow from the slide you are on, push shift and F5

Bluetooth® technology is being used in some pretty innovative ways. We are seeing it used
in everything from beacons to speakers but it is the in-between that fascinates me. Here is a
rundown of a few of the more interesting new uses of Bluetooth technology.
Bluetooth Joins Sub for Decommissioning—a company in the UK is using a mini-
submarine to evaluate conditions of a fuel storage pond dating back to the 1950s that
contains nuclear fuel and radioactive sludge. The sub deploys a probe to sample an array of
variables. The sub then sends data back on the variables through Bluetooth technology to
keep track of what’s going on.
AMPLIFI: The Guitar Amp Reinvented?—AMPLIFI introduced its new speaker earlier this
year that not only streams music wirelessly through Bluetooth but also functions as a
powerful guitar amplifier. This amp has a number of cool features and pre-sets with an
accompanying app that can take the music into a completely new level.
Pilot Project Replaces Hotel Keys with Bluetooth—wouldn’t it be cool if you didn’t need
to keep track of your hotel key card? You already carry your phone so why not use your
smartphone to open the hotel door. Starwood Hotels is working on rolling this out in its
hotels. The door locks use Bluetooth Smart to communicate with the smartphone to validate
the key code and open the door.
Bluetooth and Babies—there are a couple of cool new baby “appcessories” on the market.
The Bluetooth Smart pacifier by Blue Maestro records and senses a baby’s temperature
and sends the information to a smartphone application. An alarm will sound if the baby’s
temperature reaches a certain level. The Bluetooth Smart onsie by Mimo monitors a
baby’s respiration, temperature, movements and body position and will even track sleep
algorithms. It allows you to see real-time data, set customizable alerts and even allows you
to listen in on the baby.
Oral-B Bluetooth Toothbrush—the new toothbrush uses Bluetooth Smart to record a lot of
data on brushing habits. Launch the app and start brushing. The timer counts down while
prompting you to move around to the different quadrants of your mouth. You can then bring
the app to your next dental appointment where your dentist can give further insight like
needing to brush or floss longer in a certain spot.
Bluetooth Hair Clip Could Save Your Life—it looks like an ordinary hair clip but this
accessory contains an accelerometer, gyroscope and Bluetooth Smart sensor that detects
punches, kicks, slaps or aggressive shakes and sounds an alarm. It has a built-in jogger’s
mode to keep it from triggering accidentally. The Bluetooth sensor accesses the
smartphone’s GPS system, camera and microphone during an attack. Professional security
monitors can send any data collected to authorities for help, identification and prosecution.
